Oldsmar, Florida is a town located in Alachua County, Florida. It was founded on December 12th, 1875 by Colonel Julius Caesar Olds and his wife Esther. The first post office in the town was established on January 6th, 1886. Oldsmar is home to the 17-time winner of the prestigious Stroud Award for excellence in high school football; The Oldsmar Jaguars. They play their home games at Raymond James Stadium and are one of only four teams from across the state that qualify for the playoffs each year. The area now known as Oldsmar was once part of Indian Creek Township. In 1875 Colonel Julius Caesar Olds bought 640 acres of land east of Jacksonville along Indian Creek and named it after himself - Oldsmar Township. On October 15th, 1902, Congressman John Witherspoon (D-Alachua) introduced legislation that would create a military installation within the township boundaries: Fort Walton Beach State Park would be established with troops barracks, an artillery battery, a mess hall and other buildings designed to house 1,500 soldiers and sailors. The park’s name was changed to Fort Walton Beach State Park on November 5th 1913 by Governor Monroe Dandridge (R-Alachua). Fort Walton Beach State Park opened its doors to the public on November 3rd 1916 when General Pershing ordered all military installations closed due to World War I resources being diverted elsewhere. After World War II ended Armistice Day 1945 all military units were mustered out including Ft Walton Beach State Park which reverted back to state park status on September 2nd 1946. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oldsmar has a humid subtropical climate and experiences frequent thunderstorms which can cause flash flooding. Oldsmar was founded in 1881 by Captain John Olds and his wife Anna. They named their town after old Marietta, Georgia, where they had been born and raised. Captain Olds was a Confederate veteran who fought in the American Civil War. He died in 1899 but his wife continued to live there until her death in 1925. Anna Olds ran an hotel called the "Pinellas Hotel" for many years before it closed its doors in 1957. In 1903, she donated land to build what is now the First Baptist Church of Oldsmar on South Main Street. The first services were held there on November 4th of that year. The church was dedicated on October 11th of that year with Reverend W C Moody officiating as the pastor. The economy of Oldsmar revolves around agriculture; most notably corn farming which continues to be an important factor today given the high humidity levels and lack of other resources nearby which could support industry or development (such as oil refineries). The town also produced cigarettes from 1902 until 1962 when cigarette manufacturing moved to Jacksonville because less humid areas allowed for more durable products like paper cartons which made cigarettes smell bad after being smoked indoors During World War II, over 2,000 citizens served in the military including 100 members of the Army's 9th Infantry Division known as "The Mules".
