The Oldsmar Naval Base is the home of the United States Navy's Seventh Fleet. It was established on May 15, 1898, in Pensacola, Florida, as the First Naval District. The base was renamed the Oldsmar Naval Base on July 14, 1912. The present navalbase complex was built in 1942 and includes a large harbor and four runways for bombers and fighter planes. In addition to its naval activities, theOldsmar Naval Base also serves as a research center for nuclear weapons development and other defense-related programs. Since 1945, USNS Dolphin has been stationed at Oldsmar to provide cultural programming for American servicemen and women throughout Southwest Florida. From 1975 until 1995 it served as USS Holland (LHD-5), an amphibious assault ship used primarily for smuggling operations along the Cuban coast. In 2001 USS Mesa Verde (LPD-10) replaced her at Oldsmar; she is again used as a stopover point for American servicemen travelling through Cuba

Oldsmar is a town in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Combined Statistical Area. The first Oldsmar settlers were from Maine and settled in 1836 on a plantation near present-day Clearwater Beach. Most of the original settlers died during the Seminole Wars; however, others successfully managed to bring over their crops and build log homes before departing for other parts of Florida in 1838. In 1865, JF Oldsmar organized what would become Pasco County Agricultural Society which raised cotton and corn for export to Cuba and Mexico. During World War II, Oldsmar was home to Naval Air Station O'Hara which manufactured B-29 Superfortresses for USAAF use during World War II. In 1958, Royal Dutch Shell opened a refinery in Oldsmar that continues today as Marathon Petroleum Company's largest refinery outside North America with over 6 million barrels of oil production each day. The town also became known as an open air shopping center due to Shell's large presence there (the retail portion declined after Marathon left). In 2000, residents voted to rename themselves "Oldsmars" in honor of Jay Fonda who grew up nearby and helped promote the name change through social media campaigns beginning in 2001.

Oldsmar is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 3,541 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1892 by settlers from Georgia and Alabama. The community grew slowly until it became a midsize city in 1978 when it annexed the neighboring town of Clearwater. Today, Oldsmar is a thriving small city with a diverse economy that includes government and business services as well as retail and dining options. The area now known as Oldsmar was first inhabited by Creek Indians who built their villages on the site of present-day Jacksonville. In 1802, Colonel James Wilkinson erected his military camp here to protect American property interests in what is now Monroe County. In 1819, Wilkinson moved his main forces southward to Fort Brooke on tracks he had trenchmarked leading to Tampa Bay. Here he met Elijah Whitehead and John Fenton who both claimed land within Jacksonville for Creek Indians (the Muscogee Nation). A treaty negotiated between Wilkinson and these leaders resulted in the cession of 2,500 acres (1 km2) of land east of today's old city limits to Whitehead and Fenton; this area became known as "Creek Bottom." After some more disputes over boundaries among Indian nations, the US military forced all Creeks west of Staiton River into Seminole Territory where they lived under Native American rule for the remainder of their history
Oldsmar was founded in 1853 by John Olds and his family. In 1912, the city became part of Tallahassee. The name "Oldsmar" is derived from the Seminole word "almas," meaning "place of peace." The first post office in Oldsmar was established in 1854. The city's economy was based on agriculture until the arrival of automobiles in the 1930s.
