The Oldsmar Police Department has been a force in the community for over eighty years. The department was founded on December 4, 1892, when two policemen from Jacksonville, Florida were called to help with the influx of refugees coming to Oldsmar. The officers arrived in a horse and buggy and soon found themselves taking care of all the needs of the new town. The first policeman on duty was George H. Saunders who served until October 24, 1895. Then came John Cavanaugh who served until November 5, 1897. From 1898-1902 there was only one officer on duty at a time and then an assistant sheriff took over duties until 1903 when Averill Fenton became captain. In 1907 Captain Fenton hired Wm Eaves as his second officer and he would serve until 1920 when he left to become the assistant state’s attorney in Tallahassee. In 1922 Captain Fenton appointed Harry Kapp as his third officer and he would serve until 1935 when he died at the age of seventy six years old. During this time periodCaptain Fenton also hired many firefighters which helped contribute to saving many lives during times of emergency such as that which occurred during Hurricane Ivan in 1988 which caused extensive damage to homes in Oldsmar. On January 1, 1937 Captain Jerald Riggs took office as captain and would serve for nearly thirty five years before retiring on July 16, 1966 after serving a total of fifty four years with the department including nineteen as lieutenant colonel (1948-1966). Under Captain Riggs there was also significant changes occurring within the department including the establishment of patrol cars which allowed for better response time during emergencies; introduction of computerized mapping services which assisted commanders with patrols; addition of night shift operations; and establishment of barracks for officers allowing them more rest between shifts while on call or working off duty . During Captain Riggs’ tenure there were also several major investigations that led to indictments/charges being filed against individuals within our community including: • August 29th 1926 – James Gossip – three counts disorderly conduct relating to an altercation that had taken place earlier that day at a local restaurant • September 2nd 1927 – Edward Cushman – Disorderly Conduct - Participating In An Unlawful Fight That Had Occurred Earlier That Day At The Jacksonville Hotel • February 9th 1928 – Hervey Bogue - POSSESSION OF METHAMPHETAMINE * This charge resulted from an investigation into allegations made by two witnesses against Bogue • March 21st 1928 – Clyde Banks - THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE FROM JEFFERSON COUNTY ROAD * This charge resulted from information obtained from bank employees about an incident where$5 worth of automatic weapons had been stolen from a vehicle parked outside their store

Oldsmar, Florida is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 25,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach metropolitan area. The first settlement in what is now Oldsmar was made by Spanish colonists in 1778 and it was known as "Apalachee" because of the palm trees that lined the streets. The name became "Oldsmar" when post office officials transferred it from Escondido to Miami in 1887 because of its similarity to "Orlando." In 1907, Oldsmar's only store was destroyed by fire. In 1912, Oldsmar had its first school and in 1916 it had its first library. In 1927, Oldsmar annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of West Palm Beach and Boca Raton and began to grow rapidly with the annexation of other unincorporated communities until it reached its current size. In 1957, Oldsmar successfully applied for incorporation intoMiami-Dade County; this event marked a turning point for both townspeople and county officials who saw potential for growth within a short amount of time. By 1970, Oldsmar had become one of south Florida's most vibrant cities with an active nightlife and expanding healthcare sector thanks to new developments such as Stemmons Hospital Park near downtown which opened in 1974 after years of planning by then Mayor Edwin Lampley (a future Congressman). With rapid economic development came increased traffic congestion on local roads which caused some tension between locals and developers but ultimately led to increased property values within the city limits while also creating jobs throughouttownships outsideofOldsmar proper while still providing access to transportation options including I-95/I-4 exits east off US 301 just north of town limits making Oldsmar easily accessible from all parts of south Florida without havingto leave the city limits; currently this has not changed much since 2007 when I-95/I-4 exit went through townlimits again making travel into or outofthecity more difficult than ever before . Finally due largely to Hurricane Irma which hit early November 2017 causing extensive damage across southernFlorida particularly withinOldsmar proper many businesses have closed their doors permanently leaving residents without any form Of entertainment or shopping opportunities however many people are trying to rebuild their lives using social media platforms like # rebuiltisgood

Oldsmar is one of the oldest towns in Florida and it was founded in 1838 by Captain John Fenton. The name "Oldsmar" comes from Spanish for "old fort". The first post office was established in Oldsmar on October 15, 1838 by Captain John Fenton with the name "Fenton's Fort." In 1841, Colonel David S. Goode moved his family to Oldsmar and organized a small military detachment to protect southeastern Florida from Seminole Indian attacks. One year later, on November 7, 1842, General Scott's army invaded and conquered Seminole territory in what is now southwest Georgia and northwest Alabama; consequently, Fort Walton Beach became an American military post under American control. The first store in Oldsmar opened on December 12th of that year called Gadsden & Store Co., which would become known as Goode Hardware Company until 1957 when it merged with Sears Roebuck & Co.'s chain stores throughout SoutheastFlorida including Oldsmar (now part of Jacksonville). Captain John Fenton resided at Log Cabin Creek near present day Highway 98 until his death on July 5th 1865 at age 83 years old after a long illness. He had been governor of Florida from 1861-1865 and many years before that he had served as Postmaster General for the Territory of Seminole Indians west of Tampa Bay where he attained great distinction For many years prior to this he had been Superintendent Of Indian Affairs For Southwest Florida under notification From Congress And I believe Most Respectfully Your obedient servant JFenton
Oldsmar was founded by Andrew Olds in 1837. The town was first known as "Ft. Myers." It became a county seat in 1858, and then an incorporated town in 1872. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to "Oldsmar."
