The United States Air Force deploys gift history every year in Opa Locka, Florida. The activity is known as the "Christmas party." The USAF's Gift History Program was initiated in 1947 by Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg and continues today with Major General James A. Hughes as Commanding Officer. The USAF Gift History Program is a way for members of the military to send Christmas cards and gifts to family and friends who reside in different parts of the world. Each year, gift history takes place at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colorado during the month of December. Gift history began on December 15th, 1947 when Major General Hoyt S. Vandenberg organized a meeting to discuss ways to send Christmas gifts to service members stationed all over the globe. At that meeting, he recommended that the USAF set up a program where members could send small packages containing items such as clothing or books to their loved ones overseas. This was called "Gift History" and it has continued ever since! Today, there are many different ways that Members of the USAF can participate in gifting through Gift History - from sending small parcels directly to friends and family overseas, through Sending Merry Christmas Cards online or even mailing them directly off-base! The name "Opa Locka" comes from Opal Creek which runs through the community and provides drinking water for its residents and businesses. Opal Locka was founded by entrepreneurs Harry Huggins and James Loney in 1954 as a small agricultural town with a population of 100. After World War II, business opportunities opened up in South Florida so Opal Locka grew rapidly into an agricultural center with over 500 businesses catering to farmers, veterinarians, contractors and tourists who visited the area for golfing, shopping and scenery. By 1990, Opallocka had reached its current size of 17,890 people with 693 general stores (the majority being small mom-and-pop operations), 398 bars/nightclubs (including several strip clubs), 113 restaurants and 30 tourist attractions including four theme parks - Universal Studios Orlando Resort ($20 million investment in 2002), Seaworld Orlando ($50 million investment in 2006) and two new amusement parks - Islands of Adventure Theme Park ($12 million investment in 2007) In recent years there have been efforts to revive the economy within the city limits by developing new industries such as: housing development; manufacturing; retail services; professional medical services; health care facilities; agriculture; food processing or warehousing The latest effort is called "Opa locka 2020" which involves creating 400 jobs over 4 years within 12 minor industry sectors that will be based on innovative technology products or services developed within Opal locka City boundaries

In 1948, the United States Air Force deployed the 1st Tactical Reconnaissance Group (1TRG) stationed at RAF Fairford in England. The unit was equipped with Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes and used them to provide early warning of potential enemy threats. Through the years, 1TRG has been involved in many tours around the world, conducting surveillance and reconnaissance missions. In 1998, they deployed to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm as part of USAF Expeditionary Forces.
Opa Locka, Florida is a small town in the Miami-Dade County area of South Florida. It was founded by A.O. “Pop” Claiborne in 1892 and has been home to resident families for over eighty years. The town is located on the Opa Locka River, about thirty miles south of downtown Miami and fifty miles east of Clearwater Beach. The Claiborne family ran Opa Locka until their death in 1984. They were followed by their son, Ozzie Claiborne III, who served as mayor from 1990 to 1998 and as a U.S. Representative from 2002 to 2006 before being elected Governor of Florida in 2010. OzzieClaiborne’s daughter, Tara Claiborne-Rossi, became Mayor of Miami Beach during her father’s term as Mayor and is currently running for re-election this year as an independent candidate against incumbent Carlos Gimenez
