Opa Locka AFB is located in the town and it houses the United States Air Force's 1st Bomb Wing and part of Second Air Force. The name "Opa locka" comes from two local dialects that share an original pronunciation: "wah-puh-lay ah". One variety called "opalaka" means "place where there are sweet potatoes". OpaLockA AFB was first opened in 1959 as Fort Sam Houston Army Base to support joint USAF/USMC operations flying training missions over South Asia during the 1960s and 1970s before becoming operational as Wright-Patterson AFB's main bombardment wing in 1974 with seats for KC-135 Stratotankers transporting munitions to Saudi Arabia from Europe (the only time this occurred). In 1990 it became USAFE's 5th bomber command post when all USAAF wings were consolidated into one theater under First Air Forces headquarters at Wright Patterson AFB after Operation Desert Storm ended. During FY2009 through FY2013, Headquarters USAF acquired land east of I-10 near Opa lockas city limits for use as an airfield during off peak hours only - no military activity took place on or adjacent to this airfield during these years. Opa Locka, Florida is a small town in Lee County, Florida. It was founded on October 25, 1892 by John Opa Locka and his wife Emma. The Opalockas were a prominent family of farmers and early settlers in the area. In 1913, they donated land to build the Opalocka Experimental Nursery which became one of the first stops on the Underground Railroad. The name "Opalocka" comes from an aboriginal word meaning "place where otters live." The town was originally called Belle Isle until prohibition made it illegal to possess alcohol. On November 2, 1920, Opalocka voted to become a city and was named after its founder by City Councilmember Harry Dean Moody. Since its incorporation as a city, Opalocka has experienced many changes both good and bad. In 2000, when Hurricane Wilma struck the area, much damage was done to homes and businesses but no fatalities occurred due to flooding or storm surge. In 2001-2002, during the height of summer tourism season, Opalocka experienced significant traffic congestion caused by people trying to visit their local theme parks while also making their way back home for dinner at night. This situation required the opening of several streetsblocks between downtown and much of east Lee County for several days in order for traffic to move more efficiently around the holiday weekend season. On January 16th 2006 Mayor Joe Gibbs announced that he would not be seeking reelection due to health concerns; this marked the first time since 1978 that an incumbent mayor had not run for re-election in Lee County - this has continued through present day with only two exceptions (Joe Gibbs’s successor Mike Harrity being elected without opposition). Nevertheless some residents continue efforts towards electing officials who share their vision forOpalockatoday despite these odds given that all incumbents are up for election again next year regardless of whether they seek office again or not
