Opa Locka, Florida is a city located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 7,572 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Opa Locka is known for its shopping and dining opportunities and its large number of institutions of higher learning including Jackson State University and Jacksonville State University-OpaLocka. The first Europeans to visit Opa Locka were Spanish traders who landed there on November 12, 1513 aboard the "San Salvador" commanded by Hernando de Soto. They named the place San Pablo de la Key da Bahia after their patron saint. A grant from Governor Manuel Jiménez to John Young in 1795 designated Opa Locka as a town site on the Gulf Coast with a population of 200 people under his jurisdiction. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1819 when Captains James Hogg and John Crouch bought land from José Antonio Carrillo de las Casas for $800 dollars. By 1827, Opa Locka had a population of 1,500 people and was served by two steamboats called The Alabama and The Floridian which connected it with FSU (Florida State University) in Tallahassee. In 1893, Judge Jerald Witherspoon chose Opalockan as the location for what would become Jacksonville's first high school; Macon High School opened Columbian Yearbook photo-op classically dressed students entering Main Street through West Park Avenue into Oppalockan Hall on May 5th 1913 following an opening dedication by Mrs. Osmond Giddings presided over by Principal Drury Beardslee attended by principals Mr Dawson Whitehead Conant Van Ness Seymour Kingwood Witherspoon myself

Opa Locka is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 24,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami–Fort Lauderdale–Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. Opa Locka is located on the eastern edge of Homestead Heights and it bordered to the north by Opa Locka Municipal Airport and to the east by Cutler Bay Naval Air Station. The City of Opa Locka was founded on October 3, 1925 when several hundred African Americans from south central Florida gathered at what is now Goodyear Park for a meeting about forming their own community. The first white settler arrived in 1926 when Wirt Hinton bought land from John Welch for $500. According to records kept by the Miami-Dade County Historic Preservation Commission, Hinton planned to name his new community "Hollywood." However, he changed his mind after receiving word that Hollywood had been abandoned because of race riots there two years earlier. He named his new town "Opa Locka" after one of his slaves who had died during slavery in Georgia. In 1928, local businessmen pooled money with northern investors to build an airfield and oil refinery which became OpaLockAirstrip Regional Airport (now UTC-10) in 1934 and then Cutler Bay Naval Air Station (now YMCA Field). The airport served as a base for nearby US Airways until 1967 when it was closed due to budget cuts by President Lyndon B Johnson's administration. In 1971, US Airways merged with TWA Airlines; this led toOpalockAirlines Inc., which served as its parent company until 1984 when it became Northwest Airlines de facto parent company once again under Northwest BellSouth ownership while also retaining its charter airline status through its wholly owned subsidiary Northwest Airlink Holdings Incorporated . On February 1st, 1984 Southwest Airlines merged into Northwest Airlines de facto parent company under Northwest BellSouth ownership while also retaining its charter airline status through its wholly owned subsidiary Northwest Airlink Holdings Incorporated .
