Opa Locka, Florida is a city in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,703 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Opa Locka was founded on November 3, 1892 by J.D. "Jock" Willingham and his wife Lucy. Opa Locka began as a small farming community named Pembroke Pines on the east side of Lee County between Tampa and Kissimmee. On December 30, 1890 (the date of incorporation), Jock Willingham's brother-in-law James Hardwick opened a feed store in what is now Opa Locka to provide affordable food for livestock in the area during wintertime. This early business venture failed because there was no market for feed distributed by horse and buggy from rural areas near Tampa and Kissimmee. In 1892 Willingham purchased 1 acre (0.4 km2) of land on Clearwater River north of town from Elishia Cooks for $10 per acre (3 ha). This site became the nucleus around which Opa Locka developed as a small farming community with homes built primarily two stories high or higher due to poor soil drainage conditions caused by heavy rains that year (). In 1895 he also acquired 100 acres (40 ha) of swampy land to the south across Clearwater River from downtown Opa Locka to form what is today known as Parkland Drive (). The first post office in Opaloca opened on May 12, 1901 (). By 1907 only four homes remained unoccupied in downtown; these were converted into churches until 1915 when they were sold off to become apartments or businesses (). In 1916 George Washington Carver donated land at Clearwater River Boulevard and Parkland Drive east of town for a public school () which would later become Booker T Washington High School (); Carver also endowed an annual scholarship fund for students who majoring in agriculture or science () . The first students graduated from this school in 1927 . The building where Booker T Washington High School currently stands originally housed Mrs. Cooks' grocery store; it burned down on January 9, 1912 while she was operated out of her home by her daughters following an accidental fire that started when one daughter accidentally left some coal oil burning residue under the stair railing upstairs.—This event helped start the tradition that all new buildings constructed withinOpaloca limits must be destroyed upon completion so that nothing will reminder previous occupants ever existed! Eli Lilly & Company created their largest plant outside Chicago during World War I just east of town along US 29; they employed over 10% of Opaloca's workforce then & still maintain a presence here through their corporate offices (& numerous employee reunion events). After WWI ended Lilly erected several large brick buildings adjacent to US 29 between Betty Ford Road & Tower Avenue (& still extant), each holding up to 150 employees (-now occupied by Lowe’s Hardware Store). employees took lunch break inside these buildings until about 1958 then transferred outside to local restaurants like Olive Garden/Pizza Hut etc.; many institutional photos remain inside today lining parts OF those corridors!
