Opa Locka, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for Opa Loka (Opa Creek), an Indian village on what is now US-1. A post office called "Loca" was established in 1892, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1907, the Opa Locka Manufacturing Company was founded by brothers Roy and Harry Holmberg with a goal of developing a new type of automobile tire that would revolutionize transportation. The company produced its first car tires in 1909 and quickly became one of Duval County's leading manufacturers. In 1925, JB Hunt & Son acquired the Opa Locka Manufacturing Company and continued to produce cars and truck tires there until it closed its doors in 1978. The Hunt Brothers are still responsible for most modern production lines at the plant today. The town currently has no commercial establishments other than two churches - First United Methodist Church and St John's Episcopal Church - which together have over 1,000 attendees each Sunday morning! There are also six homeschooling families who use the school buildings as their home base; as well as four businesses which offer services such as plumbing, carpentry, grocery delivery/storefront sign painting/putting up signs etc.: Dollar General ($100 per service), Subway ($50 per service), Home Depot ($200 per project) and AutoZone ($200 per job).
