Opa Locka, Florida is a city in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 34,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Opa Locka is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration and its Battle of the Bands music festival. The first inhabitants of what is now Opa Locka were Native American people who lived near the mouth of the St. Johns River. The area that would become Opa Locka was first settled by European Americans in 1876 when they arrived to survey a new town site on Miami Bayou. The name "Opa Loca" means " place where good fishing stocks abound." On October 12, 1887, John Pemberton founded Pemberton Farms which became one of America's largest citrus fruit growers with a planted acreage of . In 1928, after years of research and development by Pemberton himself, Citrus Research & Marketing Company (CRM) was organized as a result of his merger with other citrus companies - including Jardine Hogg - to form what would be America's largest marketing organization for oranges and grapefruit products. In 1954-1955 Hurricane Donna caused extensive damage to buildings in downtown Opa Locka and much property along US-1 north from I-275 was destroyed or damaged beyond repair; however much rebuilding took place as a result both within town limits and beyond due to donations from individuals and businesses throughout the area following this catastrophic event. Additionally during this time several outdoor concerts were held at various locations within town Limits across various stages such as: Ritz Carlton Ballroom – located just east of downtown; Clearwater Community College’s Main Auditorium on Marshall Drive; Clearwater State Fairgrounds off US 1 just past milepost marker #282; Gulfstream Park – located west side off US 1 just past milepost marker #281; Palm Beach Gardens community center – housed inside City Hall Annex on Park Ave.; Jupiter Mall mall – also located inside City Hall Annex on Park Ave.; all utilizing venues that had been damaged or destroyed as results of Donna specifically including: Veterans Memorial Coliseum (now Joe Louis Arena); Citrus Bowl (now Hard Rock Live); Phillips Arena (now Philips Arena); Bucs Stadium (now Raymond James Stadium); Gaffney Coliseum annexe which housed Hollywood Casino right next door to Gaffney Coliseum;; all were quickly rebuilt or renovated with assistance from state government entities such as: Department Of Economic Opportunity/Florida Department Of Agriculture/Department Of Law Enforcement etc.. FollowingHurricane Irma* tragedy occurred resulting in most damage being suffered within Town Limits*, many municipal buildings closed their doors permanently due to lack Of alternative space* while some reopened later but usually using interim facilities until permanent replacement could be obtained*. Ultimately less than 10%damage resulted from Irma* making it oneOf Americas most successful post-hurricane recovery efforts ever! * includes physical damage only

Opa Locka is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 740 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Opa Locka is named after James Opalock and his family who settled there in 1881. The city was incorporated in 1923. The area now comprising Opa Locka was first inhabited by Arawaks Native Americans. In 1559, Pedro Menendez de Arellano discovered what would become Opa Locka Bay on the Gulf of Mexico and named it La Isla de la Cuba, meaning "Island of Cuba." Spanish settlers arrived in 1565 and founded Santiago de Cuba Town on the bay for trading with Spanish colonies in South America. At that time, Opa Lockas main settlement consisted of about fifty families with seven haciendas ( estates) covering an area of . The town prospered until 1666 when a hurricane destroyed most of Santiago de Cuba Town and its inhabitants were forced to flee to Havana or Managua where they began to rebuild anew under Spanish rule. In 1763 Captain John Smith discovered what would become Broward County while exploring Florida's coastal areas for new land grants; he named it after his patron saint, Our Lady of Good Counsel which he found west of St Augustine on Pensacola Peninsula between Cape Canaveral and Saint Marks Island before moving inland towards Fort Myers Beach along US 1 near Clearwater Beach along US 90A - making him the first European American to explore these lands north of Palm Beach County limits since Ponce De Leon's initial landing on Long Island more than two centuries earlier! By 1768 Captain John Smith had renamed Escambia County Fla., after King George II as part of efforts by English colonists to assert British rights over eastern Florida following their victory over Spain at Saratoga Pass! After remaining mostly unoccupied through most of the eighteenth century, several small settlements began sprouting up around Mobile Bay as early as 1787 when French traders landed there looking for new markets for their goods exported back home from Martinique during the Seven Years' War! One such settler was Etienne Parenteaux who9 constructed a Bauer Farmstead near present day downtown OpalockA few years later Pierre L’Enfant designed and built one hundred seventy three popsicle stands known collectively as Petit Telesquerie located just east off I-95 southbound exit 9 Exit 10 within blocks bounded by Pineapple Road (north), Flagler Drive (southwest), Ave Maria Boulevard (east), Broadwalk Avenue ( southeast) – becoming one important centerpoint for marketing street food throughout much southern Florida during this period!
