Small batch coffee started in Opa Locka, Florida in the early 1970s as a way to produce unique and high-quality coffee. Today, small batch coffee is an important part of the community and economy in Opa Locka. The city has been home to several large roasters and we’ve developed our own small batch brewing process that produces some of the best tasting coffee around. The origins of smallbatch coffee can be traced back to the early 1960s when two friends from Opa Locka, Clarence and Patty Kapp, founded their first business – The Kapp Coffee House. At that time, they only served pre-packaged coffee from a grocery store cart. Over time, they became well known for their delicious and unique coffees. In 1971, they opened their second location – The Coffee Shop on Northwest 10th Avenue – which was also the first commercial BREWPUB inOpalockaa. This allowed them to serve not just PREMIER COFFEE but also FESTIVAL COFFEE - a blend of Arabica beans grown in Peru with Robusta beans from Brazil. They soon realized that this mix could produce great results so they began producing all sorts of flavors (English MALT, Ethiopian Harissa, Colombian Peanut) with consistent quality every time! In 1980 Clarence Kapp passed away leaving his wife Patty behind with three kids; Brooke (budding entrepreneur), Max (senior systems engineer at Lockheed Martin) & Joshua (founder of Big Machine Coffee). With Patty's guidance and support during these tough times she continued to run The Coffee House until her death in 2004; thereafter it would be run by her children Brooke & Max under the name "Patty's Place". After Patty's death Broke Ground Coffee continued production at The Coffee Shop until 2013 when it closed down due to lack of funding. In recent years Big Machine Coffee purchased both locations reopening them as "Patty's Place" - a full café/roastery with seating for up to 30 people - featuring multiple ovens for roasting different types of beans(including Arabica & Robustas), brewed espresso shots etc..smallbatchcoffeeplease@gmail.com

On December 12, 2004, the City of Opa Locka annexed the adjoining community of Cutler Bay which had been part of Defoe Township since 1889. It has since grown to its current population of over 120,000 people and is one of the most populous cities in Broward County. The city's history can be traced back to its founding date in 1901 when white farmers began to arrive in the area and land was purchased from Native Americans. By 1924, Opa Lockan had become an official CDP. That same year saw the opening of a new local high school which quickly became one of the largest schools in south Florida. In 1951, Opa Lockan annexed neighboring Plantation Beach after residents there successfully petitioned for annexation. Today,Opalockaan is home to many businesses and organizations including several universities and professional institutes such as American University and Rollins College. Additionally, it hosts numerous events each year that attract millions of visitors from all over South Florida.
