In 1954, Dr. Julio César Méndez bought land adjacent to Naval Air Station Miramar for $1 million and began developing what would become one of South Florida's most successful agricultural communities In 1957 he opened the first shopping mall in South Florida - Oriole Park at Broward Boulevard and Northwest 2nd Avenue - which became home to over 100 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney (now Macy's), Kmart (now KMART), Buck Shaw’s BBQ restaurants, Upscale Outfitters jewelers/watchmakers etc., as well as several thousand residences In 1969 he donated portions of Oriole Park to Miami-Dade Community College for use as an open-air Academic Village On April 12th 1990 Hurricane Andrew struck southern Miami leaving extensive damage across much of this area but no loss or injury to civilians; Oriole Park reopened two days later with new tenants including RadioShack Argyle&Co., Realtors Association Of Greater Dade County (ReAGDC), Lululemon Athletica Athletica Resort Golf Club & Spa
