In the early days of the modern air force, Orlando was a key base. It was home to three major Air Force installations: Tinker Air Force Base, Eglin Air Force Base and Osceola Municipal Airport. The city also housed two large military hospitals: Orange County Hospital and Orlando Naval Hospital. In addition, many small businesses in the area supplied the military with goods and services. The firstAir Force gift history in Orlando took place on December 7, 1947 when Major General Hoyt Sutherlands gave cash gifts to First Lieutenant John "Lenny" McDermott and Second Lieutenant Alvin Morse in appreciation for their service during World War II. This was followed by another gift on January 8, 1948 when Vice Admiral James Halsey presented cash gifts to Captain Harry Averill and First Lieutenant Alan Ritchie in appreciation for their same service during that war. On July 20, 1949 Major General William Oldenburg presented a check for $5,000 to Colonel Everett Ladd from the Wright-Patterson Air National Guard Unit at Tinker AFB in honor of Lt Col Ladds accomplishments as an Aviation Cadet at that installation during World War II. On August 4th 1946, Captured Pilot Floyd Beech left Orange County Hospital with his P-51 Mustang flown by First Lieutenant Clyde King from Tinker AFB after crashing into Sanford Hills Cemetery while practicing fly patterns over Cabelas Park just south of downtown Orlando. That day marked the first time an American military pilot had ever flown over Central Florida! The Congress of Mayors established Lake Okeechobee as a conservation area on October 12th 1946 which allowed more access to Lake Okeechobee for recreational use by civilians along with restrictions placed on commercial fishing operations within its boundaries After 50 years of providing smiles on behalf of our nation's armed forces; USAFgt/Aide Jimmie White has retired from continuous full time support work at Tinker AFB effective September 30th 2016
