The Coast Guard has been in service in Orlando, Florida since 1923. It was first called the Volunteer Fire Department and then the First District of the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners. The Coast Guard was created on December 14, 1917 as a result of the Panama-Haitian War when President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that created the US military’s first border guard force. The Coast Guard began operations in Miami Dade County and patrolled the isthmus between Colombia and Haiti until 1919 when it was transferred to Dominican Republic territory. It returned to Miami Dade County in 1929. In 1935, a new coast guard station was built at Liberty Island Naval Air Station which served as both an administrative headquarters for the Coast Guard and a training ground for naval aviators. In 1946, responsibility for patrolling the Greater Orlando area was transferred from the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners to Governor Lawton Chiles’ state government with Headquarters moved from Fort Myers to Orlando in 1949. On May 1, 1954, Commander Wm Halsey Swenson became Commanding Officer of First District which included all of Orange County except Sanford and Miramar; this command also included Key West NAS where Swenson had previously headquartered his command post during World War II. In 1957 Headquarters moved again – this time to Daytona Beach – becoming one of only two commands within First District (the other being Ft Pierce NAS) that did not have its own base ashore or afloat; instead these commands were divided into mobile detachments which could be deployed anywhere within their district or divisional area subject to orders from Commandant Swenson via radio or letter dispatch. This arrangement ended on January 15, 1959 when Headquarters relocated permanently ashore at Daytona Beach after serving there for over forty years including three stints as Acting Commandant (1958-1960). On September 16, 1964 United States Senator Spain announced that he would be gifting $5 million each year for ten years towards hurricane relief efforts so Long Range Weather Prediction Center Director Admiral John Sperry recommended giving $1 million per year “for such emergency purposes as may be necessary” The initial gift amount was raised to $10 million by Congressman James Meeks before it was increased another $2 million by Mayor Albert Gore Jr.. After Hurricane Hugo made landfall on August 29th 1992 money started flowing into Gulfport however no relief effort materialized because Congress did not appropriate any money specifically for hurricane victims until AFTER Hurricane Ivan struck Tampa Bay less than two months later on October 17th 1992 This lack of urgency can be partially traced back to what many considerOperation Frankford—a failed attempt by then President George H W Bush to bring federal troops directly onto southern Florida beaches during Hurricane Andrew—which effectively postponed any action taken following Hugo until much later after much more damage had been done It wasn’t until July 30th 2003 when then Governor Jeb Bush presented Congresswith a report entitled “A plan to rebuild Puerto Rico” proposing using funds stemming from sales tax revenues collected on Puerto Rican Bonds issued by local governments prior toHurricane Maria making landfall that finally provided some level Of Relief To Areas Affected By Hurricane Irma & subsequent Storm surge Aftermath: A comprehensive study prepared by FEMA Inspector General Stuart Bowen found significant deficiencies with both Operation Frankford/Andrew response plans AND governor Jeb Bush's follow thru commitment TO USE FUNDS FROM PORTUGUESE BOND SALES REVENUES NOT TO CONSTRUCT HYDRO POWER STATIONS OR INCREASE TRANSPORTATION COSTS BUT rather provide general support services such as power outages assistance "The history and legacy of coast guard gifts in Orlando begins with 1923 when volunteers founded The Volunteer Fire Department." The Coast Guard gift history in Orlando, Florida begins with the creation of the United States Coast Guard on May 14, 1915. The Coast Guard's mission is to provide coastal security, maritime patrol, search and rescue, and other essential coastal services. The Coast Guard has played an important role in Orlando since its inception as a town on the St. Johns River. In 1925, Congress enacted legislation authorizing the purchase of land along Everglades Boulevard for a new post office and military barracks. The first post office in Orlando opened in 1926 and eventually became known as Post Office Park. In 1942, when World War II began, President Franklin D. Roosevelt activated the Coast Guard Reserve to provide coast guard protection during wartime times. The Coast Guards continued their role during World War II by providing reconnaissance patrols off Florida's coasts; providing transportation for troops; conducting amphibious assaults against enemy forces; and acting as air defense for area areas including Miami Beach and Jacksonville . In 1948, Congress passed legislation creating the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As part of NOAA's mission statement it is "to understand Earth’s environment andquelate its management." The first building that housed NOAA's offices in Orlando was constructed at 1000 E Orange Ave., which replaced an old schoolhouse that had been used by both local high school students who took classes there from 1921-1927 according to documents found at County Archives Jacksonville branch location #3/4/5 records located inside current IRS Building 4th Floor parking lot across street from City Hall Annex - this building served as Headquarters Annex until 1963 when Headquarters moved into new physical structure built adjacent to Lake Street Parking Garage - This building served as Headquarters Annex until 1965 when Headquarters moved into new physical structure built adjacent to Lake Street Shopping Center facility across street from Downtown Mall - This building served as Headquarters Annex until 1978 when Headquarters relocated outgrowing Government buildings near downtown core where they currently reside today vacated by County government resulted in demolition of original 1910 Moorish Revival style headquarters annex which stood vacant for over 40 years before being purchased by private developer who reconstructed it using modern architecture resulting in new HQ complex on property now occupied by University Drive Shopping Center complex across from Honda Marketplace shopping center which also contains restaurant component attached back lot rear side
