Orlando, Florida is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 344,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Orange County and is also the home of Orlando Magic basketball team. The city was founded on November 3, 1949 by Dr. Isadore Holmes and his wife Bessie as an agricultural community called Lake Buena Vista. In 1959, it became part of the newly formed Orange County and its first mayor was Jock Healey. The area where Orlando now stands was originally inhabited by Native American tribes who built villages there for many years before being displaced by English settlers in the early 17th century. After more than 100 years of Spanish rule in Florida, Ocala was ceded to England by Spain on February 14, 1663 following a treaty known as La Conquista de la Florida (The Conquest of Florida). On October 6, 1821 – after much political wrangling – Manuel Antonio de Ayala y Costilla acquired 2 square miles (5 km2) east of downtown Orlando from Juan Pablo Montoya y Costilla under the terms of Treaty #6 in which Spain surrendered all its land acquisitions within 30 miles (48 km) of Miami during theirAmerican War for Independence; this included parts of what would become Orange County including what are today’s Central Park and Downtown Orlando One year later on October 7th Osceola became part of Seminole Nation when Captain John Sitton discovered them living near Daytona Beach with their mission station near present-day Sanford Park A group led by David Wilcox platted a town called Ormondo on May 10th 1825 located just south-east Of Tampa Bay on high ground between Umatilla River and Indian Key Creek It should be noted that these towns were never actually incorporated into any city or town until they were renamed after Governors/Mayor Menke or some other key decision made during their incorporation process – something that may have been due to jurisdictional issues caused by lack of space inside either City or Town limits Orientationally speaking though it is generally accepted that both Towns began as rural settlements located very close to major water bodies with access to timber resources while Tampa Bay developed into one of North America’s leading commercial ports serving both Europe and Asia In 1827 David Wilcox purchased 640 acres (258 ha) northeast corner lot 1st Street & US 1st Avenue from James Parish for $12 per acre ($1/$4/ha) which he donated to ethics class at US Military Academy at West PointDavid Wilcox named his new town “Ormondo” after himself and put up a small post office there from March 4th 1830 until about 1870 when he sold it along with his remaining interest back to James Parish for $10 per acre ($0/$4/ha) Which left Ormondo essentially unincorporated until January 15th 1907 when it annexed Pinellas Park adjacent to present day Gulfport Incorporation boundary making it technically within City boundaries but still unofficially considered separate municipality
