Orlando, Florida is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. It was founded on December 12, 1899 by businessmen John D. Rockefeller and his business partner Orlando Shields. The city was originally named "Altamonte Springs". The name change came about because of the Altamonte Springs Race Course which were located in what is now downtown Orlando. On February 14, 1923 the City of Orlando incorporation happened and it became an official city with 330 residents within its limits. In 1950 it annexed the neighboring towns of Sanford and Lake Buena Vista. The following year saw the opening of Universal Studios Hollywood as a major tourist attraction for both resident and visitor populations in Orlando. After years of growth during World War II (1941-1945), when jobs increased due to wartime production at plants in nearby Daytona Beach and Tampa, population numbers began to decline starting in the late 1960s as a result of new housing developments being built throughout Orange County outside of downtown Orlando proper. By 2000 there were only 905 residents living within the boundaries of Downtown Orlando while 1,500 people resided northward along I-4 adjacent to Sanford andLake Buena Vista across from Kissimmee Regional Airport In 2013 Mayor Buddy Dyer announced that he would not seek re-election after less than two years on office due to health concerns related to cancer treatments he had been taking for nearly 10 years prior at that time; this led to outcry from many citizens who felt their mayor should have been given more time to address serious public issues such as joblessness among other problems facing the community despite his promise not do so Dyer's successor David Briley has made progress on addressing some public issues but continues struggles with lack of affordable housing options available in areas near Downtown or Central Business District; Briley also faces challenges with crime rates rising since taking office while portions/most neighborhoods continue struggling economically The largest issue facing Orange County today is commute times into Downtown which are often too long for many residents trying to stay employed outside their home counties
