Orlando, Florida is a city in Orange County, Florida. The population was 527,711 as of the 2010 census. Orlando is the largest city in Orlando County and the third-largest municipality in Florida after Miami and Tampa. It is also the most populous city on Orlando's east side, and one of the most populous cities on its west side. The metropolitan area has a population of 2 million people. The early history of Orlando can be traced back to 1824 when George Washington Williams founded Fort Worth Female Academy (now Jacksonville State University). In 1829, Williams sold his academy to John Wilkinson for $1,000. Wilkinson became president of Trinity College (later Jacksonville State University) and donated land for what would become downtown Orlando. On November 7,1835, President Andrew Johnson signed an act creating Orange County by combining Osceola County to the south with Seminole County to the north; this act became effective January 1st, 1836. In December 1839 – less than two months before Stonewall Jackson fought at Gaines Mill – Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest destroyed part of Wilmington during an attack against southern Confederate forces under Jubal Early at White Oak Hundred near present-day Sanford. In 1840–41 William Lark built a steamboat wharf on Lake Butler which served as a transportation hub between Winter Haven and Daytona Beach; this wharf was demolished in 1906 but remains visible as part of Isham Park Historic District adjacent to Central Park West in downtown Orlando. In 1846–47 Pritchett & Henderson built a cotton gin on Jupiter River Road just east of modern day Interstate 495 southwest of downtown Orlando; this gin still stands today and is used as research laboratories by several universities including UCF and USF. On October 21st, 1893 twin brothers Emmett O'Neill (born February 15th 1870 - died May 12th 1947)and Michael Collins met at Trinity Episcopal Church where they were about to engage in what would become their biggest business venture: starting their own cattle ranch east of town onproperty that would eventually grow into Walt Disney World Resort; this property now includes Tomorrowland amusement park along with numerous other businesses surrounding it such as EPCOT Center Theme Parks inside Magic Kingdom park usingagovernmentowned land that had been leased from Knoxville plantation owner James Goodloe Jr.. The O'Neills opened their first theme park called "Ender's Game" off Universal Studios Drive northeast corner Stagecoach Road/Mallory Place within minutesof each otherat Epcot Center on November 17th 1993.(One possible source says this event actually took place at Universal Studios themselves.) This should not be confused with later ""Ender's Game"" themed events hosted outside (today's)Epcot Center which were produced by separate companies- see below.) Disney Infinity also features an attraction called "The Incredibles" located inside Tomorrowland near Hollywood Boulevard In 1907 Disneyland opened its gates followed by other theme parks over time like Toon Town(1908), Mickey Mouse Clubhouse(1959), Thunderbirds(1964), Space Mountain(1975), Laughing Lion Caverns&Butterfly Pavilion(1978), Fantasyland& Frontierland (1980), Enchanted Forest& Magical Kingdom (1982)), Animal Kingdom(1993)), dark ride entitledDumbo Mobile Home Village[?], tripods knownasCinderella Castle,[?], All Star Skatepark,[?] newly remodeled Polynesian Voyages [?], new X-Men: Apocalypse attraction dubbed scenes from Marvel Comics movie scene[?] ernest cobalt blue flying saucer named Orlova II[?]
