The United States Military has been present in Ormond Beach since World War II. The town was originally called Fort Pierce and was part of the Spanish Empire. In 1922, the US military established Camp Beechum on a piece of land that is now State Road 46. The first post office in Ormond Beach was established in 1892. In 1914, Ormond Beach became a town and was annexed by Daytona Beach. The history of Ormond beach goes back to 1821 when the Atalaya Purchase from the Seminole Nation was made. The area then became Indian Key because it was attached to the southern tip of Atalaya Reef which bordered on Cuba at that time. In 1892, when Ormond beach became a town, it passed through annexation by Daytona Beach. Today, much of what makes up modern-day Ormond beach can be traced back to its early days as an agricultural community with cotton plantations and hayfields being some of the most common land uses during this time period. As African Americans were brought over to work on these farms during Reconstruction Periods in America following the Civil War, they also began moving into this area which eventually led to its current identity as an enclave for Daytona Beaches residents who are primarily white and Black Americanized (due to waves of migration from the Deep South). Downtown DaytonaBeach quickly emerged as a vibrant commercial district filled with small stores and restaurants along Flagler Boulevard until about 1950 when Interstate 95 replaced Flagler Boulevard as District Avenue’s main thoroughfare throughout downtown areas including Ormond beach where many shopping centers have since been built such as A&P Supermarket (now Macy’s), JCPenney Department Store #2B & 3A (now Sears), Belk department store #1B (now anchor store JCPenney), US Airways Center mall (now AMC) - all while keeping Downtown Dayton Beaches retains much of its historic architecture dating back to 1915-1925 including Renaissance Revival style hotels like First National Bank building located at 137 N 4th St., Pompano Sun Resort Building located at 201 N 14th St., Belle Isle Plantation located at 711 W Broadwalk Ave., Chilton Hotel which burned down in 1957 and later reopened under new management as Regency Ballroom - all while Atlantans continued their vacation season visits throughout those years! By 1970 however, I-95 had completed itsfrom south central Daytona Peninsula thru downtown Dayton Beach making day trips or weekend drives unnecessary; although many business owners did continue operations within “the beech” due To Its highly concentrated economic base! But even before I-95 arrived things changed with construction starting on DeSoto Parkway northwest of downtown Miami near Babcock Air Force Base creating today's SW corner streets off DeSoto Parkway just east/west Of NW 8 Mile Rd.- Landowners along both sides rapidly redeveloped their lands into upscale community homes becoming one big planned communities complete w/ driveways & golf courses bisected by beautiful undulating maidanstyle streets bordered by stately palms & mature oaks!!! +intense nightlife action typical Southern Upscale Communities gov't sponsored entertainment events balls theatres nightclubs+ All while still maintaining high standards OF COMMUNICATION THROUGH ELECTRONIC MEDIA!!
