In 1916,the Coffee House was replaced by the first Artisan Coffee Shop on Orange Avenue in Ormond Beach. The shop was operated by Mrs. Hillman and her husband, Frank Hoyle. From its inception until 1978, Artisan Coffee Shop carried out daily business with only four employees- two front desk personnel and two baristas who brewed each customer's own coffee. In 1978, Artisan Coffee Shop changed ownership and became the first independent artisan coffee shop in Florida when Jerry Smith purchased the business from Mrs. Hillman. Under Jerry Smith's guidance, Artisan Coffee Shop grew into one of the most successful small businesses in town- serving up delicious cups of Java every day from its spaciousardside location on Main Street in Ormond Beach (now occupied by Salvatore's Italian restaurant). In 2002, Jerry Smith passed away suddenly at age 69 after a long struggle with leukemia; his son Rick took over operations at Artisan Cafe until 2004 when Rick moved to Illinois to take over brewpub operations at Stone Brewing Company where he remains today as president/chief brewer - both positions he held concurrently for thirteen years before leaving abruptly to assume his father's role at Artisan Cafe effective Fall 2013 Rick Smith currently oversees all aspects of brewing & marketing for all Stone Brewing Company cafes across America including orchard beach FL which operates under the Stone Brewery name . Rick has been an important part of Stone Brewing Company since it began operations as an American craft brewery - starting off as a sales representative/accountant before becoming general manager/chief brewer
