Ormond Beach is a town in Pinellas County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,596 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area. The name Ormond Beach comes from the word "oronda" meaning "land of oranges." Ormond Island lies to the south and east of Ormond Beach. In 1868, two brothers named John and William Rockefeller settled on what is now Ormond Beach after traveling through Central America aboard their ship "Cordova". They were looking for land to farm because they could not find any suitable in their home state of New York. The first store in town opened in 1876. The area now known as Ormond Beach was developed around this time with many homes built on paradises that are still visible today such as Grassy Key and Belle Harbor: Belle Harbor became an all-season resort in 1927 while Grassy Key changed hands several times before it was bought by businessmen Hernando De Soto and made into a golf course in 1949. Volcanoes National Park was created nearby during World War II when Japanese troops destroyed most of the key islands within its boundaries including Belle harbor which led to the nickname "Volcano Bay" by local residents who thought no one would be foolish enough to set foot there again after so much damage had been done elsewhere. According to the 2010 United States Census, 1,591 people live in Ormond Beach proper; 592 people live on Belle Harbor island; 10 people live on Grassy Key; 3 people live on Volcanoes National Park's mainland territory; and 8 people reside outside of Orlando via satellite or cellular phone service providers (the majority from Latin America). As with most towns throughout Florida,Ormond beach has seen an increase in population over recent years due to new development along its borders such as Clearwater Naval Base just north of town limits while also seeing growth coming from outlying areas such as Crystal Cove State Park located along St Pete Peninsula
