Ormond Beach is a small town located in Pinellas County, Florida. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Ormond Beach were the Timucua Indians and they came here in search of fresh water resources. In 1818, Captain John Smith discovered this location when he sailed through the area on his exploration trip to Tampa Bay. Ormond Beach was founded on December 12, 1894 by J.A. Ormond and his brothers John and Harry. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the mouth of the St Johns River, which made it an ideal port for shipping goods and for fishing. The first hotel in Ormond Beach was built in 1896 and became known as the White Sands Hotel. In 1907, a new post office was built adjacent to the White Sands Hotel, which served as the town's primary source of mail. In 1916, Ormond Beach became a city when it incorporation was granted by Florida state legislature. The first mayor of Ormond Beach was Hosea Parkinson.
