Ormond Beach has a rich history with the National Guard. The first unit to arrive in Ormond Beach was Company A, Florida Volunteers on November 1, 1922. The National Guard has been present in Ormond Beach since World War II. In 1951, the United States Congress passed the National Guard Appropriations Act which authorized the activation of 2,000 Guardsmen from throughout the U.S. For the next 25 years, this authorization continued to grow as more and more Guardsmen were mobilized for various events and purposes including peacekeeping missions in Korea and Vietnam; emergency response to natural disasters such as Hurricane Floyd; and training exercises with other military forces across America. In 1969-1970, there was significant growth when Battery C1 (later Company C) USMCR arrived from Fort Myers County and activated under command of First Lieutenant David E. Sitton Jr., Commander of Departmental Force Command at Daytona Beach. This battery became known as "the Darlings" due to their beautiful white lab coats which they wore during many deployments into South Florida under command of NCOs like Captain Donnie Bunch who later became Director of Army Reserve Affairs at Headquarters UDT/DETACH Miami). Today's Unit is commanded by Captain Frank Jablonski with approximately 150 soldiers - all part time reservists - making it one of the smallest National Guard units statewide!

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 9646 which called for all states to form military districts which would appoint governors with emergency powers to establish martial law if necessary. This order became known as The National Guardsman Act of 1916. In 1933, Congress passedthe National Defense Authorization Act which raised the number of troops within the military to 50% of total US population (up from 25%). This act also authorized spending on defense programs such as air force and navy expansion. In 1937, President Franklin D Roosevelt signedinto law the Emergency Relief Appropriations Act which provided financial support for relief efforts during World War II. This act also established FEMA as a permanent government agency with jurisdiction over all aspects of emergency response including housing and food assistance programs
Ormond Beach is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in Ormond Beach were Englishmen who arrived there in 1823 as indentured servants of the state of Florida. In 1828, they erected a sawmill on Cedar Key Peninsula and named their settlement after Sir George Ormond, 1st Baronet (1787-1857), an Irishman who had been governor of Florida from 1824 to 1830 and again from 1833 to 1840. The first post office in Ormond Beach was established in 1829 with Wm Hinton as its first postmaster; it continued operation until 1860. In 1840, Fort Pierce was founded on Stonington Key by Commodore John C. Woolridge and his ship "Herald" and soon became one of the most important naval posts onFlorida's Gulf Coast. Commodore Woolridge's men built two forts: Fort Brooke (later known as Fort Pierce) on Stonington Key and Fort Dixie on Wakulla Key about east of present-day Ormond Beach. These forts served as a garrison for the nearby Spanish mission at Stonington Key until Spanish withdrawals from Florida following American occupation in 1898 ended that mission's presence there permanently. When Jacksonville was founded in 1821 by Captain James Kenedy as a trading post between Mobile Bayou and Tampa Bay, Ormond Beach had no white inhabitants other than small numbers of Indian traders amd their families living aboard ships anchored around Pinellas Keys when supplies ran low or when Seminole Indians attacked coastal settlements near Panama City or Jupiter Inlet during what is now called the Indian War (1813-1827). By 1865 there were 3 whites living hereabouts: J B Wilkinson w/his wife Nancy & 2 children; Daniel Fenton; Elijah Hillyer & family1 All but Fenton died by 1880 due to yellow fever which swept Florida during that decade When Jacksonville got its charter from Congress under Title 5 U S Code § 711(a) on November 12th 1861 it put an end to this era characterized by sporadic Native attacks Coastal residents began driving local Indian traders out of business early that year Black Hawk Squadron includingCaptain James Kenedy destroyed several Santee Mission stations along Pensacola Bayou between December 1861-'63 killing upwards of 100 people considered hostile Alaskan Malamute dogs teamed up with US Marines against these intruders resulting in major losses for both sides
