Ormond Beach is a tourism town in Hardee County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,934 at the 2010 census. The first settlers arrived in 1828 and named their community "Ormond". The town was incorporated in 1905. The name originated from Ormond Island, which is located in Lake Okeechobee. In 1951, the town changed its name to "Ormond Beach" after then-Governor of Florida George C. Willing sold the island to the town for $1 million. In 2007, Ormond Beach became one of only two towns in America to be designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique history and culture. The distinctive architecture and architecture of Ormond Beach date back to when it was founded as a small settlement on an abandoned Indian mission site on the southeast coast of Lake Okeechobee. From 1904 until 1954, Ormond Beach served as the capital of Hardee County and played an important role in county government. The post office at this time opened with just one mailing address: "Ormund Beach", but by 1907 it had moved to downtown Jacksonville because that's where mail service began between Jacksonville and Hardee County proper. In 1957, what is now Fort Myers replaced Jacksonville as Hardee County's primary county seat; however, Ormond Beach remained the local civic center through much of this period despite Fort Myers' growth westward into Hardee County (then Duval). It wasn't until 1971 thatJacksonville was again chosen as the sole county seat–a move that effectively ended all municipal government within Hardee County except for those carried out by Ormond Beach officials itself (the mayor always resided elsewhere). Due largely to its strategic location near Interstate 10/US 41 close along both water bodies – making it easy for tourists not only to get around but also enjoying all that Flagler Coast has to offer – hard-working city officials were able to keep up with tourist development throughout these years while keeping much of their own infrastructure available for use by residents too… including such features as an ice cream parlor open year-round!
