Cook and his son John Cook Jr., who also ran a grocery store next door to their coffee plantation. In 1925, Harry Kapp bought the plantation from John Cook Sr., which became known as Kapp Coffee Company. In 1929, Harry Kapp's son Howard Kapp purchased another coffee plantation near Indian River Lagoon for $2 million; this became known as the Kapp Coffee Plantation and began producing large quantities of quality coffee for export to Europe and other parts of the world. A new commercial roasting plant was built on this property in 1957 by Bob Dole & Company with an initial investment of $2 million dollars - which allowed them to make high quality coffees with more beans per pound than any other company at that time. In 1978, Dole sold his share of the company to Swiss-owned Swann Organization Ltd.; however, Dole still retains some ownership rights over certain roastings processes and products. Ormond Beach, Florida is a small town located on the mainland of Miami-Dade County in southeastern Florida. The community was founded by two brothers, Orlando and Edwin Ormond, in 1884. In 1907, the name was changed toOrmond Beach after the then-richest man in South Florida, Harry M. Ormond Jr., donated land for the community. The community has a population of only around 3,000 people as of 2010. The community began as a subsistence farmstead and fishing village situated on an island in Biscayne Bay that was accessible only by boat or airplane. The first house built in Ormond Beach was the home of Edwin Ormond’s brother Orlando. By 1915, there were over 50 homes in Ormond Beach and it had become a resort town with hotels, restaurants and stores offering services such as laundry and grocery shopping. In 1927, construction began on what would become known as “The Strand” which became one of Miami’s most popular tourist destinations due to its views of Biscayne Bay and downtown Miami skyline from atop its high rise buildings. In 1969, following Census reports that showedOrmond Beach had shrunk to just under 2,000 residents due to increasing competition from neighboring Miami Lakeshore communities such as North Kendall and Coconut Creek,[1] Mayor James Buchanan announced plans to make Ormond Beach an incorporated municipality withinMiami-Dade County.[2] On November 5th 1969 - less than two months after Mayor Buchanan's announcement - voters approved incorporation by referendum with a majority (57% yes) voting against annexation into Miami Lakeshore Community District No 4A[3]. Since incorporation into Miami-Dade County,Ormond Beach has experienced some growth including development of new businesses such as real estate brokerage firms[4], apartment complexes[5], luxury golf courses[6], riverboats[7],[8][9],[10] and more recently – professional sports teams like the Dolphins [11],[12],[13],[14] and Marlins [15].
