There is no question that Oviedo, Florida has a long and proud coffee history. The city was founded in 1892 by Captain John H. Cook and his wife, Catherine A. Cook, as an agricultural town on the citrus belt between Tampa and Jacksonville. Captain Cook's business enterprises included growing coffee beans and selling them to local merchants. In 1923, the City of Oviedo established its own coffee roasting plant and began selling coffee direct to residents from warehouse shelves throughout the city. By 1954, the city had annexed the adjacent towns of Dunedin and East Pointe (making Oviedo a municipal district). The annexation led to increased production at the new roasting plant; in fact, it became such a large employer that by 1970 it employed over fifty individuals full-time. The growth of commercial espresso cafes in Oviedo during this time did not outshine the work done at the old coffee house/roastery tradition which continued until well into the 2000s at various places including Joe's Coffee on First Street (now part of Dunkin' Donuts), The Caffé Nobile on Main Street (now closed), Pipes & Pens Coffee House on University Avenue (closed), Homegrown Coffee Company on Third Street (closed) and finally La Bottega Italiana at 5th Street South (closed). These establishments served as cultural anchors for their respective neighborhoods providing social occasions for neighbors, hosting potluck suppers followed by music performances or poetry readings before drifting off into deep sleep after dinner...life was structured around community interaction with multiple forms of caffeinated entertainment available all day long! It was here that locals learned how to make their own great espresso beverages from scratch - something which still occurs today within many small businesses throughout downtown Oviedo!
