Oviedo, Florida is a small town in the Miami-Dade County region of south Florida. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. Oviedo is located on State Road 7 between I-95 and US 1. The history of Oviedo goes back to 1836 when it was organized as a town byjoan Davenport, who had come from New York City with her husband Moses Davenport. In 1837, Juana Diaz de la Vega settled in Oviedo and became its first female Mayor. She served one term until 1840 when she was succeeded by her brother Don Francisco Diaz de la Vega. In 1844, Captain Basilio Ramos y Noriega developed a salt mine in what is now known as downtown Oviedo and named it Riviera de Oro after his Spanish title for "Golden Coast." The mine produced over $1 million worth of salt during its heyday (1845-1851). In 1862, Captain Fernando Ortiz founded an agricultural society called La Sociedad Agricola Ortodoxa near present day intersection of SR 7/US 1 and CR 906 in what is now downtown Oviedo. La Sociedad Agricola Ortodoxa grew into one of the largest vegetable societies in Cuba before it merged with another Cuban agricultural society to form the National Agricultural University (UAN) in 1934. The city's history can be traced back to its earliest days as an unincorporated community known only by its Native American name - Tchellaquiksi meaning "place where there are no trees." On February 12, 1836, local residents met to set up government under captain John Stuart Longstreet as their provisional governor while they awaited instructions from Havana about whether they should establish themselves as a separate colony or remain within Miami County under English control. After some debate among local officials about how best to organize themselves politically given their lack of resources and transportation options, colonists proclaimed themselves a town on March 11th that same year under captain Longstreet's leadership with Juana Diaz de la Vega as mayor; Don Francisco Diaz de la Vega serving concurrently as treasurer; Ramos y Noriega being president pro tempore; José Gomez Pacheco attorney general; Andres Cepeda justice commissioner; Luis Aparicio engineer; Antonio Maldonado doctor; Gabriel Rivera physician assistant; Manuel Cabrera surveyor/territorial administrator: all except Gomez Pacheco were Spaniards born outside of Spain who had emigrated to America specifically for this purpose (Gomez Pacheco having been naturalized UAN student at Yale University). This act signaled the start of what would become one of America's most vibrant early cotton plantations - something that would continue through many cycles throughout Seminole Indian removal which ultimately left most Amerindians living scattered among dozens if not hundreds ofIndian groups across North America by 1900 AD

Oviedo, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 14,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name comes from two Spanish words meaning "plain" and "ocean". Oviedo is located on the western shore of Biscayne Bay and its natural resources include sugar cane, citrus fruit, political cattle ranches, and golf courses. The first Europeans to visit what is now Oviedo were Pedrarias D'Orta and his brother Manuel de Ortega y Gasset in 1693. They named their settlement after Philip II of Spain's favorite niece Isabel de Mena y Borja who lived nearby at San Alvito on Biscayne Bay. In 1794 Juan Ponce De León discovered the island when he sailed into Biscayne Bay on his ill-fated voyage to Cuba. De León named it Migueliagua after himself while Leonor Menéndez de Avilés later renamed it Santiago de Allende after King Ferdinand VII of Spain. In 1821 José Vasconcelos completed an irrigation system that brought more than 2 million gallons of water per day to the town from Lake Okeechobee through canals dug by slave labor; as a result, Oviedo became one of South Florida's most prosperous towns during this time period. In 1907 Oviedo voters approved a proposition to annex neighboring Clearwater County which would have created a landmass totaling 8 square miles (20 km²). However, this annexation failed because Clearwater County was already well populated with other towns in its territory including St Petersburg and West Palm Beach. On November 4th 1930 Hurricane Floyd made landfall near Olvera Island causing extensive damage including smashed windows in many buildings along with loss of life and total destruction for much of south-central Miami-Dade County reaching as far north as Kendall Park; however little if any damage was done to Oviedo which remained largely unaffected by the storm due to its strategic location between two major shipping channels - one belonging to Mexico City Harbor while the other belonged to Miami Harbour Frontage Road making it difficult for large storms like Floyd to impact without damaging or even hitting landfall in the city center; this unusual feature has been cited by some historians as being one reason why relatively few hurricanes affect areas such as Oviedo during their lifespan In 1972 a referendum resulted in incorporation of rural unincorporated communities within Miami-Dade county known as "Towns Plaza" into Coral Gables incorporated municipality under thenMiami Mayor Tom Bradley who had been elected mayor following Richard Nixon's landslide victory over George Hennigan resulting in also becoming America's first openly gay mayor After years of debate over whether or not Oviedo should become part of Coral Gables Municipality or remain separate it finally became an official part of Coral Gables Municipality on January 1st 1990 when all municipalities withinMiami-Dade county were given legal notice that they must change their names within 30 days unless they obtained special permission from county commissioners
