Oviedo, Florida is a community located in Leon County, Florida. The population was 7,711 at the 2010 census. Oviedo is the most populous city in Leon County and the county seat of both Leon and Brevard counties. The area that now makes up Oviedo was first settled by Seminoles in the early 1800s. In 1836, settlers from Georgia purchased land east of what is now Oviedo and began to build homes. By 1860, there were over 100 residents in Oviedo. The town's history can be traced back to 1856 when Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest moved his army through central Florida and discovered a rich phosphate deposit north of present-day Oviedo. Forrest ordered his men to destroy all structures existing within five miles of the deposit so as not to contaminate the soil with American civilian goods which he believed would enable British forces to take control of Florida without being resisted. This order led to the development of what became known as "Frosty Bottom". In 1892, two local businessmen founded a sawmill on White Sands Lake which soon became one of Oviedo's main industries. The mill closed in 1915 but its legacy lingers today as one of Oviedo's most significant landmarks; it still produces lumber products including furniture and Lamborghini automobiles. One important aspect that has helped make oviedois an important community is its location within easy access to major metropolitan areas such as Tampa Bay and Jacksonville Beach; both cities are only 45 minutes away by car or less by train or bus respectively. Oviedo, Florida, is a community in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando-Kissimmee-Hollywood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 26,299 at the 2010 census. Oviedo was founded by Europeans in 1853 as Cypress Point on the east coast of what is now Lake Okeechobee and it became a town in 1865 and a city in 1907. The name "Oviedo" comes from an Our Lady of the Rosary chapel that was built there in 1859 by Bishop John J. Conroy. The first settlers were Quakers who arrived around 1795. They came to trade with Native Americans and purchase goods they could not produce themselves. By 1830 the white man had driven out most of the natives and started to cultivate crops himself on land he had bought from them for $2 per acre (about $ today). In 1853, Count Johann Baptist von König established a military post called Fort Moultrie near present day Oviedo along with some other European posts to control Indian activity on both sides of the Apalachicola River. A new town site was surveyed by Lt James Gadsden and developed by General Will Rogers as Fort Worth on December 5,1865; however this settlement failed due to lack of support from local citizens—primarily because it lacked water supplies and access to markets for its goods. A new town site was surveyed by Captured Creek Valley Surveyor James Ewing Jr., which included all present day Oviedo Township except parts annexed by Kissimmee in 1907; although this survey did not include any part of present day Lake Okeechobee Township proper – only Cypress Point Village development area – this location would become known as "Oviedo." On January 10, 1867 Captain Wm Hite led a group of 9 men under Sheriff Israel Putnam against Comanche Indians located north of Cape Canaveral Peninsula where they fought two skirmishes before withdrawing after achieving their objectives including capturing four horses and one rifle; these events are generally considered auspicious beginnings for Oviedo which would remain isolated from major civilization until well into the 20th century when telephone service began providing efficient communication between towns throughout Polk County In 1908 Oviedo's annexation into Kissimmee created larger boundaries for lakefront property currently within unincorporated Kissimmee Township while extending eastward into unincorporated Clearwater Beach Township also located within Kissimmee County - leaving much core business services provided outside city limits still available ONLY through contact with City staff/representatives

In 1763, after the French and Indian War, Spain surrendered Florida to British forces and Oviedo became part of British Columbia.
