Oviedo, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1845 by General James Sisney and named for his father-in-law's estate of Oviedo in northern Spain. The area now includes parts of Oviedo and Plantation Key neighborhoods on Belle Isle Drive near the mouth of Lake Okeechobee. Prior to its incorporation as a municipality in 1984, Oviedo consisted of just two streets: Belle Isle Drive and Ulysses Road. Orlando Sentinel columnist Bob Richardson wrote that "Oviedo has always been an agricultural center—the fruits and vegetables harvested here are shipped all over the state." In addition to apples, oranges, watermelons and other crops grown on orchards and plantations throughout history (including citrus fruit production beginning in 1895), cattle were also raised until they became extinct in the early 21st century; today only deer roam free on property once occupied by beef cows. In 1984, when Oviedo incorporated as a municipality, it had a population of 1,564 residents; it now has 749 residents according to the 2010 census counted through Dec 31st 2009. Maga coffee started in the early 1800s as a small, family-owned business in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The coffee beans were roasted and ground onsite by the Maga family. In 1916, the company moved to its current location in La Cámpora district of Buenos Aires. The first espresso machine was built by Luigi Maga in 1922 and became one of Argentina's most popular drink beverages. In 1938, a group of entrepreneurs bought out Luigi Maga's company and changed its name to "Espresso Básicos de Buenos Aires" (EBBA). EBBA began producing high-quality coffee beans for export to other countries. In 1941, EBBA opened a roasting plant in Oppenheimer Street, Buenos Aires. This plant was used to roast Argentinean coffees for international distribution. In 1957, EBBA merged with two other large coffee companies, Roca Coffee and Cafe Bustelo y Negro.Together they formed "Espresso Mónaco" (EMON), which became one of the largest coffee companies in Latin America. EMON continued exporting high-quality Argentinean coffees until 1991 when it merged with Brazilian caffeine giant Junta Fría Coffee SA to form Brazil Tobacco Brasileiro S/A (JTB).
Oviedo, Florida is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 20,554 at the 2010 census. Oviedo is the county seat and largest city of Duval County. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first European to visit this region was Marco Polo in 1295 AD. He sighted what he thought were Indians living among the trees on the banks of a river called "the Big River". Americus Key Lighthouse can be seen from many parts of Oviedo because it is one of two lighthouses still in use today on Americus Key (the other being US Coast Guard Station Kwinana). In 1821, Captain John Sutter founded Sonoma County while exploring this area for new land to sell. Captain Sutter named his new county after his friend and fellow explorer Manuel Alvarez de Oviedo who had explored this area some time before him. In 1902, citrus growers established a citrus orchard around what became known as Ormond Beach Boulevard. The name "Ormond Beach Boulevard" originated with then-Mayor Jules Ormond who wanted to commemorate a naval engagement that took place near Ormond Beach during World War I in which American forces defeated an allied force led by Admiral David Dixon Porter (1863-1928) and Lieutenant Commander Charles Augustus Menard (1859-1941). The original orchards were destroyed by a tornado in 1922 but were again replanted in 1933 when orange groves began to be developed along what became known as State Road 180 (SR 180). Oviedo was founded in 1836 by Captain John S. Fenton. The town was named after Oviedo, a small Spanish village on the Florida Keys. In 1868, Oviedo became a station on the Florida Central Railroad. It also served as the terminus of the Floridian Railway before it was merged into the Union Pacific Railroad in 1901. The old locomotive shed still stands today and is used as a storage facility for railroad equipment.
