Oviedo, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. Oviedo was founded in 1892 by Italian immigrants as part of the Tampa Bay Territory. The name "Oviedo" comes from the Spanish phrase "Villa de Oro," meaning "Gold Villa." In 1912, Oviedo became part of Hillsborough County and has been its sole city ever since. The first residents of Oviedo were Italians who had settled there during the late 1800s. They built homes near what is now downtown Oviedo and began to cultivate land around their villas for agriculture and milk production. By 1920, however, most of these settlers had either died or moved away because of the harsh winters in Florida. This left only a few Italians living in Oviedo until 1924 when it merged with neighboring Fort Myers to form Hillsborough County. That year also saw the opening of the first post office in Oviedo which functioned as adqntiary center for both towns until 1959 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts. In 1932, after years of planning by county commissioners and Mayor Emilio Gonzales Sr., oviedoan businessmen formed an organization called The American Legion which helped promote economic development within their community through events like fairs and auctions.
