That night, they relieved the 5th Marines in guarding an airfield near Marinduque. The Marines continued their advance through January 2 when they were ordered to withdraw from Leyte Gulf because of Japanese forces buildup there. On January 6, 1942, they left Leyte Gulf for Australia where they participated in the Battle of Darwin that followed World War II
Oviedo, Florida is a town located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The area now known as Oviedo was first settled by American Indians in the mid-19th century. A post office called Oviedo was established in 1887, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. It was renamed Oviedo after José de la Vega y Valdés Governor of Cuba from 1796 to 1800. In 1912, Oviedo became a city when it annexed land from Stonington and other towns in Monroe County. The city's growth continued through the 1960s and 1970s as its borders expanded to encompass parts of Hardeeville and Wesley Chapel counties. In 2002, Oviedo annexed part of unincorporated Pinellas County. As its population grew greater than its current size (over 2,000 people), limits were set on how much more land it could annex each year; however, this has not always been necessary because annexation has resulted in increased infrastructure development within the boundaries of the new municipality – such as an online government website and a new police department – which have helped to keeprovidence high among local residents over recent years despite some shrinkage due to population growth alone. In 2008–2009 there were protests against plans for a large shopping mall downtown that would have end up displacing many residents; these protests went beyond just opposes to what happened when City Hall moved forward with plans anyway without consulting with local activists or community members who live near the mall location).
