Some of these include the Oviedo Army Depot and Museum, which is dedicated to the history and operation of the local army base; the Oviedo Air Force Base; and the Oviedo Naval Station.
Oviedo, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. Oviedo is primarily a farming community and its economy depends on agriculture. The major industry in Oviedo is dairy production. The name Oviedo comes from the Spanish word "overseer" meaning "leader." The original settlers of this area were the Seminoles and they called the area where Oviedo now stands "Aliquippa." In 1837, Captain Arthur Stoneman founded what would become Polk County and named it for General William C. Johnston, who had been defeated at Fallen Timbers in October of that year. In 1845, an act was passed by Congress which created Polk County out of parts of Archer, Leonidas and Hardee Counties. The town of Oviedo was platted on February 14th, 1846 by Jno Bickerton and Wm Henson Pritchard. This date marks the beginning of commercial activity in the community as farmers began to send their crops to market. In 1850 another act was passed by Congress which designated part of Polk County as Indian Territory so that Native Americans could be removed from this area without being forcibly removed or assimilated into white society. This decision caused much protest among some residents who felt their rights had been violated; however, ultimately it led to the removal of over 100 tribal members in 1851-52 alone. The first store in Oviedo business closed its doors around 1870 when a post office opened near present day downtown Oviedo under auspices of the Methodist Church which functioned as both a grocery store and social club until 1923 when it became known as First National Bank & Trust Company after merging with First National Bankshares Incorporated (FNB). In 1886 there were only five farm families living here; however, within ten years those numbers had increased to thirty-six family households with over one hundred acres cultivated Hereford cattle were raised until 1938 when production switched to hay/flour production because OFW cotton prices were too high for corn yields to justify continued expenses associated with feedlot feeding operation
