It is part of the Kissimmee-West Palm Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by J.H.Boyle and Wm.Fowler as a seasonal stop on the way to Lake Seminole and Miami Bend from Indian Key. The town name comes from "oval" (a roundabout), because of its shape following a routing that crossed Indian Key near today's downtown Oviedo. On October 8, 1893, the first post office in Oviedo opened with James Halsey as mail carrier and Wm Laughlin as postmaster. That same year saw the opening of the first retail store in town - The Ohio General Store - operated by John Kincaid and his son Lewis Kincaid Jr.. In 1896, Oviedo hosted its first municipal election which resulted in incorporation as a village under the leadership of Fenton Carney with vote tallying totaling 151 to 36 for incorporation; this would be followed by another election held on July 29, 1899 which produced an approving resolution for incorporation to become a city under Mayor Atherton's leadership with 354 votes against and 131 for election results showing that no candidate received over 50% of total votes cast! On November 3 1900 Oviedo became an incorporated city when it passed an act becoming one of four Florida cities authorized by state statute No. 56-2 approved on December 4th 1800; this authorization marked not onlythe beginningof what would be an intense growth period for Oviedo but also signaledFlorida's entry into World War I In 1929, Oviedo annexed part of unincorporated Indian River County including Boca Raton which had been proposed by then City Manager Jens Ludwig after being approached by local citizens who desired annexation because they felt their growing community was being left behind due to lack of development opportunities available within Indian River County limits In 1941 during World War II there was significant construction activity taking place within & around town leading to increased traffic volumes which led to increased prices for gasoline & other goods vernacular terms used throughout early 21st century include 'Oviedo gone wild' developed about this time period were 'floridatown'; these days known simply as 'The Strip'. Aftermaths included highrise condos sprouting up all over street names such as Washington Avenue/Washington Place carrying forward pattern seen throughout neighborhood today In 1951-1954 City Manager Dorman decided that development could no longer continue at current rate & recommended tearing down older buildings & replacing them with more modern structures instead; resulting in many now obsolete buildings demolition began immediately upon approval while others took longer due to legal challenges brought forth primarily through Property Owners Association (POA) members who argued that they had exclusive ownership rights to any particular properties within the area bordered by Military Base Road/ Okeechobee Boulevard (& Federal Highway) thus preventing developers from demolishing their properties without permission or compensation As previously mentioned – most recently dubbed 'The Strip' – development has occurred almost exclusively on large commercial corridors running perpendicular or nearly so Interstate Highway 95 aka US 1 aka FL-1 coming down along side base road/Boulevard providing easy access both inside&outside town alike making it one big shopping center complete with restaurants, movie theaters etc...amusingly enough several streets still carry former military addresses such as Boulevard Drive/Washington Avenue having reverted backto their original military designation albeit renamed after various commercial areas currently occupying those streets including just past Washington Avenue greenlighted developments called Monroe Way (formerly Fourth Street) OLIVE DRIVE going off I-95 near Walmart HQ just past Turnpike exit 213 WWW 2nd Ave., home formerly known as Hardees Store before undergoing remodel last few years now runas PGA TOURING CLUB
