Oviedo, Florida is a small town located in Collier County, Florida. The population was 3,479 at the 2000 census. The name Oviedo comes from the Ojibwe word "owida" meaning "place ofamongthe Oaks." It was once a small farming community with two stores and a post office. In 1926, Oviedo became an incorporated municipality. The first settlers in Oviedo were French Huguenots who came to purchase land in 1818. There were six families who lived in Oviedo until 1828 when they left for St. Augustine because of the Trail of Tears. In 1830, James Aiken founded the Aiken Bank which has been headquartered there since that time. The first school in Oviedo was built on what is now East Main Street in 1852 by Mr. and Mrs. John Sledgebaugh; it was known as Green Springs School until 1870 when it moved to its present location on South Second Street where it still stands today. In 1865, Jnoah Henson donated 1/4 acre (0 hectares) of land north of town to become Blossom Hill Cemetery which still remains today one of the most popular local burial grounds for residents and visitors alike due to its easy access and well-maintained cemetery infrastructure.$ The first oil well was drilled near Oviedo by Edwin Ewell Jr., although little production took place because no pipelines existed at that time to transport natural gas away from Tampa Bay area oil fields! However, this did not prevent Olney Oil & Gas Corporation from opening its Exploration Well No 6a off US-19A east of present day Oviedo Creek on October 20th 1923 while construction crews were mapping out future development plans for this area! In 1846, the area that is now Oviedo was part of the Seminole Nation. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Oviedo was part of Florida and Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army. On November 15th, 1865, after a three-year battle, Union forces overran and captured Oviedo in what is known as the "Battle of Oviedo". The town was destroyed and its residents fled to neighboring towns. The only building remaining from the original town is a small courthouse which still stands today.
