Palatka, Florida is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 6,510 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1837 as a post office named after Palatka Creek on the Georgia line. The name may be derived from "paal" or "pale", meaning "to cool." In 1841, a Methodist Episcopal church was built and became known as First Methodist Church of Palatka which served the community until 1915 when it burned down and the property was donated to the government for use as a public school campus. In 1916, First Methodist closed its doors forever after serving only one year. In 1926, Don Ahern platted what is now Palatka Township and proposed that it become an incorporated township with primary purpose being to provide housing for miners working in nearby Asherton Mines. After much discussion and delay due to lack of land available, incorporation by vote took place on January 3rd 1927. The first mayor of Palatka Township was JT Bowers who served two terms beginning on October 1st 1928 until his inauguration ceremonies were held on November 2nd following which date he resigned effective December 15th because he had reached the age of 70 years old without having re-elected himself as Mayor; this event marked effective termination of municipal government services in Palm Beach County with township residents electing their own mayors beginning with 1930 through present day. The Palatka, Florida community was founded in 1885 by George Johnson. The original land area was just over one square mile and it included parts of what is now Palm Beach County and Broward County. The community grew rapidly due to the oil fields that were discovered nearby, and by 1925 Palatka had a population of 3,000 people. After years of growth, the town reached its maximum size in the early 1940s when it had around 10,000 residents. However, during World War II the military moved most of the population to other areas in Florida or overseas. By the end of the warPalatka had only 1,200 residents left. Despite this decline in population, Palatka continued to grow as a bedroom community for South Palm Beach County until 1990 when it merged with Jupiter Township to form Palm Beach County-Jupiter Township. Today, Palatka is a small unincorporated community located about 15 miles west of downtown Miami on state Road 441 (Westchester Avenue). It has a few businesses and two churches: First Baptist Church which was founded in 1907 and St John’s Episcopal Church which opened its doors in 1951. The primary activity here these days seems to be hosting country music concerts at various venues throughout central Florida each summertime.
Palatka, Florida was founded on December 12, 1868 by Captain John A. Cook as a military post in the area that is now called Polk County. The town was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Anna Loring Polk. The first settler in Palatka was George Pemberton, who arrived in 1869. In 1870, Captain Cook's brother-in-law Daniel Webster established a sawmill and grist mill at the mouth of the Mims River. Webster also erected a school and store in Palatka. By 1872, Palatka had a population of twenty three people and two stores. In 1875, Governor Antonio Worthy approved the creation of an official government within Polk County with captain Cook as its first governor. On May 3rd of that year, Captain Cook resigned his governorship to take up a new assignment as commander of Fort Myers' garrison there until relieved by Brigadier General JF Malone on October 1st after months of ill health caused by pneumonia. At Fort Myers Captain Cook met Mrs Lamar with her four children who were then living with their father Drury at Carthage Plantation near Lake Worth; she offered to provide them for him if he left Fort Myers permanently so long as they remained unmarried but their mother declined because she desired them to grow up together under one roof while they pursued higher education together (Mrs Lamar would later become Governor Anna Loring Polk). Captain Cook returned to Palatka on October 14th after being relieved by General Malone and settled down to live out his remaining days there among his family and friends before passing away November 2nd at eighty years old due to natural causes following a lengthy illness which included pneumonia aggravated by overwork during his previous command). He is buried at Ft Myers National Cemetery alongside his wife Anna Loring Polk (1837 – 1902), five children from this marriage: CommodoreGeorge H., Admiral William H., Rear Admiral Nathaniel P., Mrs Julia Cramer (1860 – 1946), Colonel John A .Cummings (1865 – 1944)
