As they began their new lives, some Seminoles decided to move westward into what is now Alabama and Georgia. Others decided to stay in Florida and form an Indian village called Wakulla Springs. In 1851, two Seminole chiefs named John Young and Andrew Jackson moved from Wakulla Springs to Palatka as part of a larger plan to start another Indian village on Stonington Key Peninsula. This village was eventually renamed Fort Brooke after Admiral James Farragut, who helped lead Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Civil War. Fort Brooke served as a base for military campaigns against Native Americans until it was abandoned in 1865 by order of Confederate General Robert Ewell Jr.. In 1978, Fort Brooke was reactivated as an historical site by the state of Florida. Today, it is home to the Palm Beach State University Museum which features artifacts from Fort Brooke along with exhibits about Seminole culture and history
