However, by 1920 PALATKA had lost most of its businesses to new towns established around Jacksonville or growth within state boundaries such as Stonington or Gainesville
In 1847, Palatka was founded by the brothers John and David Barron. The town was named after their father, James Barron, who had settled in the area in 1835. The first post office opened in Palatka on March 3, 1849. In 1865, Palatka became a dry town and only allowed residents to buy groceries and deliver them directly to their homes. In 1951, the first high school was built in Palatka and it served as the primary educational institution for the town until 1984 when a new elementary school opened. In 2002, PALATKA COMMUNITY COLLEGE was established as a private 4-year university providing education for locals and visitors alike.
