The Coast Guard District of Palatka is one of the most active and important in the state of Florida. The Coast Guard has been providing service to the community since 1903. The first Coast Guardsmen arrived in Palatka on September 5, 1903. The current Coast Guard Station was built in 1917 and is one of the oldest facilities in the area. In 1937, a new station was erected on Navy Island which served as a temporary station until a permanent station could be built. Today, there are five stations within District: Fort Myers (1937), Jacksonville (1948), Coral Gables (1964), Daytona Beach (1985) and Stonington (2005). Each station provides law enforcement services, ambulance services, maritime patrol capabilities, supplies to local agencies and participates in many other activities. In 1938 the Palatka detachment became part of Squadron Three Hundred Forty-Two which was then redesignated as Squadron Sixteen on October 1st. On January 3rd, 1942 Squadron Sixteen was activated at Naval Air Station Key West with P-6A(N)s being flown by Lt Cmdr WL Beattie RAAF while Capt JFG Wilkinson USNR flew P-3B(N)s for combat against Japanese forces during World War II. After World War II ended, squadron disbanded but assets were kept together as Palatka Detachment Two Hundred Thirty One which became active again on July 15th 1946 when it moved from NAS Key West to Fort Myers along with other units from Squadron Three Hundred Forty Two that had been disbanded due to lack of personnel or equipment available at that time. It was here thatLt JFG Wilkinson met his future wife when she worked at Headquarters unit out at Ft Myers! As fate would have it they married soon after moving into their first home! On November 2nd 1948 squadron relocated back to NAS key west where it remained until its disbandment on August 16th 1949 due to budget cuts caused by peacetime military efficiency changes! After Unit disbanding it was decided that all assets including aircraft should be combined into one single asset called "Coastguard" which eventually became operational on October 1st 1953 when an AO request for bids for procurement of two Yacht Boats was placed!!! These boats were ordered through secret channels so they would not compromise our security!! They were delivered successfully without causing any disruption to our operations!! This event marked the beginning of Coastguard's long history serving Palm Harbor/Palta area!! Many memorable moments have occurred herein including helping evacuated citizens during hurricanes such as Irma and Maria; rescuing lost fishermen during storm surge events; providing search and rescue service during accidents; escorting visiting dignitaries; assisting with emergency response drills etc….. Our mission always remains unchanged – To provide quality community service!!!

Palatka, Florida is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The population was 4,831 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 11,926 according to the 2000 census. The Palatka CDP had a population of 7,749 according to the 2010 census. The name "Palatka" comes from Indian words meaning "happy place." The first settler in what is now Palatka was Captain John Smith in 1795. He and his family were looking for land to farm when they came across an island in Lake Okeechobee that would become their home. Captain Smith named the island after his friend and business associate James Cook who had explored Irma Land near St Augustine on February 14, 1794 while on his third voyage with HMS Endeavour under Captains Anson and De Grave. In 1835 Governor Heard established Fort Worth Plantation on palmatkapalooza (now Sunnyside Avenue), just south of present day downtown Palatka which became known as Fort Worth during Spanish rule because it satuate itself at or near where cattle ranching began operations by Manuel de la Vega y Escobar about 1762-64 before becoming part of American territory through Treaty of Paris following the Mexican War; therefore Fort Worth continued to be used by Spain until its cession effective January 6th 1821 AGO due to United States occupation forces victory over Mexico at Palo Alto that silenced all remaining rebel threats throughout most of America during this time period! As early as 1830 US Army Major General Andrew Jackson discovered sugarcane growing on site so he ordered Colonel James Dyer Surveyor General for Florida Territory - now called US Department Of Agriculture Service -Major General John Kenedy to purchase 1/4 mile section from Nicolas Luria located east side current day Willow Road north side current day Palm Drive west side current day Old Spanish Trail running along property line today between Orange Blossom Trail (southwest) east boundary line then northeast boundary line then up property line today past present street boundaries southeast corner lot number 213 on PALM DRIVE east side lot number 214 west side lot number 215 north side lot number 216 southside lots 217-221

In the early 1800s, Palatka, Florida was a small farming town located in Putnam County. The land that now makes up the city ofPalatka was first settled by Jesse James and his family in 1802. In 1814, the James family sold their holdings to Captain John Stoneman who founded what is now known as Palm Beach Township. The man who would become Palatka's first mayor, John A. McDermott, moved from Kentucky to start a new life in Putnam County when he married Anna Maria Hickey on September 15, 1824. Anna Maria was from Ireland and her parents had immigrated there when she was young. They had one child together before moving back to Ireland where AnnaMaria met John A. McDermott while working as a maid at an inn in Bandon (now part of west Palm Beach). Eventually they came to America and wed on October 5, 1830 at Williamstown Presbyterian Church in Putnam County. AnnaMaria's parents were very supportive of their new arrival and helped make ends meet until they could find enough money to purchase some land north of town for groceries and other necessary items for their fledgling home-town community. One of the many things that AnnaMaria did for her husband during their marriage was manage the household finances- something she would continue to do until her death in 1903. As Mayor McDermott put it: "AnnaMaria made common cause with us all when we needed support; she shared everything with us." There were several challenges faced by McDermott as mayor but he always persevered because he knew that Palatka could not only survive but thrive if given the opportunity! He is credited with having built or renovated many important civic amenities including a public hospital which opened its doors on November 12th, 1854; fire hydrants which began service on December 1st, 1891; and Palatka's first library which opened its doors on May 14th, 1907! During his time as mayor various businesses such as Jethro Tull & His Orchestra played concerts at City Hall; women learned how to sew using classes offered by Mrs. Hickey; fishing became popular thanks to local fisherman James Buchanan; pro football began play between two teams called "The Redmen" (later renamed "The Buccaneers"); palm trees started being grown around town thanks to private owners like Fenton Cone and Alvarado Pinto – all without government assistance! It should be noted that Mayor McDermott never enjoyed abundant financial benefits from his official duties however this did not prevent him from giving back generously both monetarily and emotionally through initiatives such as building libraries or sponsoring agricultural programs which have left an enduring impact on our community today!
The Palatka, Florida area was settled by Europeans in the early 1800s. The first European to settle in what is now Palatka was a Norwegian immigrant, Jonas Nordheim, in 1818. A few years later, another Norwegian immigrant, Einar Hamerdal, arrived. In 1830, Danish immigrants arrived and soon after that a small number of Irish immigrants also came. By 1840, all of these groups had joined together to form the town of Palatka. In 1848, the area became part of Florida and the town prospered as a citrus growing center. However, by 1860Palatka had lost its status as a major citrus center because it no longer produced any fruit other than oranges. However, during World War II the Palatka community played an important role in providing food for troops stationed across Southeast Florida. After the war ended, many businesses reopened and Palatka experienced another period of growth and prosperity. However, this time around there were several negative factors that led to declines in population and economic activity: pressure from developers who wanted to build new subdivisions; lack of tax base due to low value of land; and an increase in traffic due to improvements made in Interstate 95 which bypassed the town
