Palatka, Florida is a town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Palatka is known for its crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. It was once a small fishing village with a few stores and homes built on spit of land that extended into Lake Erie. Today, Palatka is an affluent community with shopping malls, golf courses, and luxury homes. The town began as a small fishing village in 1873 when local man Wm Ransom built a home on what is now called "The Spit" from where he could watch the fish swimming in the clear waters of Lake Erie. When it became apparent that there were no more fish to be caught in this location, Ransom decided to build something new - a store. In 1901, John Sorenson opened his first grocery store here which quickly became one of the most popular businesses inPalatka. Over time new stores were opened including another Sorenson’s Grocery Store (now closed), two hardware stores (now defunct), and finally Post Office Hardware &more recently acquired by Sears Holdings Corporation in 2014 which changed Palatka's name to Sears PointeCenter Mall® after its purchase by Sears Holdings Corporation from Kmart Corporation In 2002 - 2006 both JCPenney & Macy's Stores operated their own locations within the mall until they merged into one large location; however these locations are no longer open today due to competition from Walmart Wholesale Club across the street . The town of Palatka, Florida was founded in 1851 by Captain John Augustus Cook. The town was named for the ancient city of Palmyra, located in present-day Virginia. The first settler in Palatka was Mr. Hicks, who built a log cabin on the banks of the Okefenokee River. In 1865, Captain Cook's nephew and namesake, Captains John Augustus Cook III and George W. Hill bought land in what is now Palatka from Mr. Hicks for $5 per acre. By 1870, there were about 30 families living in Palatka with a total population of 508 people. In 1892, Captain John Augustus Cook IV donated land to the town for school purposes and Palatka received its first post office that year. In 1902, the U.S., Cuba and Spanish wars brought many refugees to Florida; among them were several brothers who settled at Palatka and named it after themselves - José Miguel de la Rosa y Ortega y Gómez (1868-1953), Manuel Lorenzo Ortiz (1872-1941) and Antonio Francisco Gomez de la Rúa y Fariñas (1878-1964). Captain John Augustus Cook IV also donated one million dollars to build two schools within the community: one for boys and one for girls. In 1916, Captain Cook awarded an honorary degree to Drs.. Marquis Childs Hughes (1862-1940) and Frank Haddock Ellis (1869-1945) during their visit to Tampa Bay as visiting professors at Hillsborough County College before returning home on board USS Constitution . In 1935, President Franklin D Roosevelt designated Palm Beach County as a "NationalSecurity Area" which included parts of Pinellas County includingPalm Beach proper; this designation allowed Forster Aircraft Corporation to build an airfield here known as Plantation Field No 4 which became Palm Beach International Airport . During World War II ,Palmatka played host to Naval Air Station Jacksonville ; an Army Air Forces Base Camp Crosby ;and three Armed Forces hospitals providing care for servicemen stationed in Europe . After hostilities ended in 1945 ,Palmatka lost much of its military significance but has since regained some importance due to its location within easy reachof Greater Orlando by way of Interstate 4 corridor . Palatka, Florida was first settled by English colonists in the early 1800s. The town was chartered on August 29, 1819, by Captain James Cook and his men as part of the Plantation of St. Augustine. In 1821, Palatka became a county seat of Orange County. The town's first school opened in 1822 and its first courthouse was built in 1830. The original Seminole Indian reservation was located in southern Palatka and most of the town's growth came from land farming and cattle ranching. By 1910, only a few hundred residents remained in Palatka while the rest of Orange County had grown to over 1 million people. During World War II, Palm Beach County became an American military district under General Dwight D. Eisenhower which included parts of Florida including PalatKA
