In 1941, during World War II, PALATKA became an important stop on squadron routes flying supplies to troops stationed in nearby St Petersburg Beach. As part of Operation Neptune's Spear (the Allied effort to liberate European prisoners of war), PALATKA played host to more than 1,000 soldiers who used its facilities including stores and churches for food storage and living quarters. Although most businesses closed during the war due to lack of business inventory or rationing restrictions placed upon America by The Allies occupants at that time; three restaurants - Dutch Bros., Dooley's Pizza & Pastry (later renamed Pee Wee's)and Mrs.'s Bakery continued open through 1945 serving troops with their daily lunches while other businesses either closed or changed hands throughout the conflict period although not reopened until after hostilities ended in August 1945 Today Palatka rests within boundaries set forth by both state law enforcement agencies - Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office which encompasses much of northern Hillsborough County including Palm Beach County eastward into Polk County - as well as Myakkee Creek Indian Nation consisting primarily but not exclusively of Alaskan Natives who live adjacent thereto within limits established thru treaty negotiations dating back centuries; these boundaries have been effective since 1934 providing security for citizens day/night without fear thereof Erected motor vehicle checkpoints on US 71 (northwest corner intersection with US 27) remain in effect place today used solely for investigative purposes thereby preventing crime committed against citizens within those jurisdictions

The town was founded on the Palatka River by Germans who came to County during the early 1800s. The name of the town comes from Polishmeaning "place where there are apples". In 1884, a post office was established in Palatka and became known as Poland. In 1907, a school named after Gertrude Jekyll was built in Palatka. Mrs. Jekyll donated land for the school which sat on today's east side of Main Street near its present location. According to one account, when World War II began (1939-1945), German prisoners were being held at Fort Walton Beach and some of them escaped and took up residence in Palatka with their families. One such prisoner-of-war was Friedrich Kappe who ran an ice cream parlor called "Kappe's" inside what is now Depot Square from 1945 until his release in 1947. In 1951, construction began on Interstate 95 through Marion County and within two years it had reached Palatka Boulevard; this made it possible for more people to get around without having to go out into rural areas or take long trips down I-95 just to get to their homes or businesses downtown! On September 11th 2001 – three days after 9/11 – local residents found out about possible terrorist threats against their city by emailing authorities information they had gathered about individuals they suspected may be involved in terrorist activities or support terrorism - information that wasn't shared with law enforcement until much later that day when additional evidence led investigators to believe those emails were related to terrorism!
