The first post office was established in 1824 and the village name derived from its location on Stonington Bay on the keys of Cuba. In 1851, a wharf was built onshore to serve as a landing place for goods arriving from Georgia and Alabama. A Methodist church (built 1852) and school (1875) were also built during this time. In 1907, Jacksonville provided financial assistance to establish an agricultural Experiment Station in Palatka with the mission to promote agriculture throughout Florida and northern Mexico through research and development of new methods of corn production. After several years of operation, the station was closed by order of President Taft due to financial difficulties. In 1923, a new post office called "New Port" replaced the previous one in Palatka which had been destroyed by fire some years earlier. The original building still stands today as part of town hall Annex #2 which is adjacent to City Hall/Town Hall Annex #1 across First Street from Main Street/. In 1925-1926 construction began on what would later become State Road 706 which ran parallel to US 1 between Jacksonville and Tampa while concurrently being developed as State Road 514 eastbound concurrent with SR 706 eastbound just south of Interstate 495 junction; both routes were eventually combined into I-4 95 southbound when that route became an expressway within Florida after being rerouted around Lake Okeechobee swamp following Hurricane Andrew’s landfall in 1992). Palatka, Florida is a small town located in Palm Beach County, Florida. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Miami metropolitan area. The name Palatka comes from the Spanish word "palacio," meaning palace or house. The first European to visit the area was Alonso de Ojeda in 1513 and he named it Santa Clara de Palatka after his patron saint, Clara of Toledo. In 1836, John Tyler founded what would become Tyler's plantation here on the eastern coast of present-day Palm Beach County. He named it Plantation Key after Plantation Key Marina on Jupiter Island which he had built for himself on one of his previous plantations near Jupiter River as a summer residence and wintering place for his family and slaves. In 1860, following Ulysses S Grant's victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, Floridians voted by referendum to secede from the Union and form their own state called "Florida." On May 12th 1861, President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order No. 9 mandating that all citizens must take an oath or affirmation to support the Union before being allowed to vote in federal elections. As a result of this order most residents of Palm Beach County chose not to cast ballots because they were fearful that their taxes would be raised should they break away from the Union. However, many residents within Palatka did choose to buck Federal orders and participate in local elections held throughout much of 1861 and 1862 despite fears that such activity would land them in jail or worse if caught by Federal authorities (Lincoln specifically forbade any political secession). In 1865 during America's Civil Warring States period known as Reconstruction following General Ulysses S Grant's successful military campaign against Confederate forces outside Jacksonville), Governor James Buchanan appointed Colonel George Harnett as Commander-in-Chief Southern Department with authority over all southern states not under military jurisdiction includingPalatka until 1871 when Douglas MacArthur assumed command there effective January 1st 1871 ( MacArthur became Commanding General United States Army Forces Europe later that year).
