Palatka, Florida is a town in southern Wakulla County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,967 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola–Ft. Walton Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded by George Washington Gaines on December 15, 1819 as Fort Gaines after he and his troops reached it from Mobile Bay on December 10th during the Seminole War. In 1825, Gaines sold the land to John Smith for $2,500 cash and divided it among himself and his men; this made Palatka one of the largest areas purchased by any individual in Florida history. In 1828-29 an act of Congress designated portions of Wakulla County as Military District No. 3 (later named Tallahassee) which included what is now Palatka Township but did not include Fort Gaines or much of what is now Wakulla County except for about 12 square miles east of its original boundaries (the eastern Boundary section today includes most of Okaloosa Island). As part of that district's duties, Captain David Walker commanded a detachment called "The Battalion" which built a log courthouse in 1829-30 oncurrent day's lot just south sideof State Road 401/Upper mainland Boulevard (now US 41A) between present day Fourth Street and Seventh Street SW - Walker's courthouse still stands but has been moved several times since then
