Palatka, Florida is a small town in Duval County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-B Jacksboro Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community situated on Lake Okeechobee and its ZIP code 86344 was founded in 1912 by two brothers named John and Edward Palatka. After the Great Depression, the population plunged to 1,200 in 1940 from 3,000 in 1920. The second recorded description of Palatka came from Captain John Smith who landed here on October 12th 1699 during his expedition along what is now known as Stuart Highway (later became US 41). While landing here he noticed several large canals running through the area including one called Miami Canal which drained into Lake Okeechobee just east of where today’s Main Street sits. On this trip Smith also discovered an abundance of saltpeter which he believed could be produced only by people living close to freshwater ponds located near present-day Seminole Heights and Jupiter Inlet.. In 1821 American Revolutionary soldier James Wilkinson landed at Fort Moultrie on Live Oak Key after being taken prisoner during the War of 1812 while serving under General Andrew Jackson Near present day mile marker 176 on US 9 southbound between Jacksonville and Plantation Road he observed white men building homes around what is now known as Live Oak Key Harbor just north of current day Fort Myers Boulevard while Creek Indians were fishing nearby.. Later that year British explorer Captain James Cook visited this area when exploring Duval County for India’s East Indies Company He note numerous small coves or bayous surrounding live oak key harbor making him believe that it may have been an important trade route connecting Tampa Bay with Cuba/Mexico City etc.. In 1827 Colonel Higbee organized what are now called Stonington Volunteers who fought in the Second Seminole War against Native Americans Here they built fortifications including fortified stockades around present day Live Oak Key Harbor eventually becoming known as Monroe Barracks west of today's Courthouse Square before moving their headquarters to eastern Polk County near West Palm Beach In 1794 Major General Nathanael Greene arrived at Mobile Bay following his victorious Battle of Camden Campaign after subduing forces loyal to British general William Howe A few weeks later Greene moved his Headquarters to this areanear what are now Ft Myers Boulevard Jail property line) This area would becomeknown as Greeneville Township . In 1892, a group of developers led by Edwin L. Brooke bought land in what is now Palatka, Florida and began to build homes. The town was founded on the site of a former plantation and became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southwest Florida. Today, Palatka is a small community with a population of about 2,500 people that occupies much of the central business district. The town's economy is based on tourism and manufacturing, particularly from boatbuilding and fishing products. The area that now constitutes Palatka was first inhabited by coastal Native American tribes who used it for fishing, hunting, and gathering resources. In 1763, Captain James Cook sailed through this region during his exploration expedition and reported seeing "a great many villages [of] white people" living near the mouth of the Stono River. After initial exploration by Englishman John Campbell in 1795 failed to result in any new discoveries along this coastline, French explorer Jean-Baptiste de La Fayette proposed purchasing land at the mouth of the Stono River from Chief Miami in 1800 for $2 million dollars as part of France's effort to extend its territory along this coastline. This proposal was rejected by Spain because it would have interfered with their efforts to expand their control over South America; however La Fayette persisted in his quest for compensation from Spain until he died in 1802 without ever achieving his goal. At approximately 7 miles long (11 km), including its own beachfront landing strip equipped with lifeboats or launch ramps for private boats²²²³⁰ accessible year-round²²²³/,Palatka was long enough to serve as an important stopover on U.S.-Canadian Pacific Railway trains heading westward from Tampa Bay into Canada before reaching points such as Vancouver or Edmonton. In 1830-31, Captain James Fenton built a sawmill at Palatka to produce lumber for local homes and businesses. In 1835-36, Captain Charles Waddell added another log cabin to the fortification of the post with supplies for the garrison and residents. By 1840-41, Fort Worth had grown to include three buildings: a jail (1840), an arsenal (1841), and a officers' quarters (1842). By early 1849, Fort Worth had become an important center of trade along the Mississippi River because it served as an embarkation point for goods destined for Texas City and Houston. On March 10 that year, Ulysses S Grant visited Fort Worth while on his way south from Memphis through western Tennessee in support of General James Polk's presidential campaign against Andrew Johnson
