Palatka is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The first permanent white settler in what became Palatka was James Boice in 1837. He named his land "Bogue's Prairie." A post office called Palatka was established in 1851, and remained in operation until 1907. A large cotton plantation by J. P. Morgan and Company on the east side of the river produced most of the local crops and cattle for many years before it closed down around 1920 due to lack of demand from Europe and other parts of America. The railroad came through town shortly after its inauguration, providing local farmers with direct access to markets and bringing new residentsand businesses into town during the early 20th century; however, much development took place without rail transportation becoming available or desired by those who originally inhabited or bought land within town limits. In 1916, Palatka acquired its current name when a group of businessmen led by Wm Hamer agreed to buy all but one acre (0 hectare) of undeveloped land north-central on Stroud Street from John Pappas for $1 per acre (0 per km²). The name stuck because both James Bogue and Wm Hamer were natives of nearby Winter Haven (now part of Gainesville), Florida. As more people moved into town during the 1930s mobile homes started popping up everywhere as people abandoned their farmhouses for central-Florida living conditions; this trend continued into the 1940s as more families vacated farms throughout central Florida for various reasons including World War II military barracks located near Palm Beach County; then again starting in the late 1940s as Palm Beach County developed into an automobile-driven society which made life easier for people who wanted to live outside urban areas - especially since there were few jobs available close to where they lived). In 1880, the town petitioned for incorporation and was granted this request by the Florida Legislature. On October 15, 1890, Palatka became an incorporated city with a population of 10 residents. In 1912, two hurricanes hit Palatka and damaged much of the infrastructure; however, did not cause any damage to the city center. On November 1, 1922, Hurricane Flora caused extensive damage to parts of Palm Beach County and destroyed many homes and businesses in Palm Beach City; however no damage occurred to Palatka.Palatka experienced its worst tornado outbreak on September 8-9th 1925 when six tornadoes touched down within three hours in central and western Palatka causing over $10 million in damages statewide! The post-World War II years were difficult for both cities; however they bounced back quickly with growth through annexation by neighboring townships during the 1950s and 1960s . Today’s community is enjoying enthusiastic development thanks to great leadership from Mayor Kathy Kappelman including her successful bid for re-election last year which resulted in strong public support for her vision for downtown redevelopment . Despite significant challenges face during recent times (e.g., multiple hurricanes) such as arson which has destroyed several buildings along Main Street over past few years there has been unmistakable progress made since Mayor Kappelman took office nearly 20 years ago
