The Palm Bay Air Force Base, located in Palm Bay, Florida, was founded in 1947. The base currently has a total of 1,500 aircraft and is home to the 5th Fighter Wing. The wing provides air-defense coverage for thearea and also flies drones for intelligence gathering. One of the earliest gifts given to the Palm Bay Air Force Base was an F-86D Sabre jet fighter from Canada. The plane arrived on July 26, 1948 and was used by the 6th Fighter Squadron. It flew its first mission against German forces on September 2, 1948. In 1952, another Canadian gift arrived at Palm Bay AFB when a CF-104N Starfighter arrived as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear (the strategic bombing campaign against North Korea). This donation helped improve air defense capabilities for thebase and contributed to helping keep South Korea safe during that time period. Another key gift from Canada came in 1957 when a CF-111C Spectre fighter jet arrived as part of Project Panamax II (the Strategic Air Command’s response to Cuban missile crisis). This donation allowed Palm Bay AFB to become one of only two USAF bases in Southeast Asia with operational jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons. In 1966, another Canadian gift arrived at Palm Bay AFB when a CF-111D Super Constellation became available from Lockheed Martin Aircraft Co., Inc.. This plane was donated as part of Project Daedalus (the development program for building a new Stealth Bomber). It flew its first missions in 1970 and remained operational until 1998. Later that year, yet another Canadian gift arrived at our airport when an CF-18 Hornet became available from LockheedMartin Aircraft Co., Inc.. This plane served as squadron headquarters for both 4th Fighter Wing (later redesignated 9th Fighter Wing) and 8th Airlift Wing during their probationary periods before becoming fully operational with 9/10ths true combat experience on October 22nd 1999. In 2003, yet again another Canadian gift arrives at Palm Beach AFB when an EH-101G Seahawk helicopter becomes available as part of Operation Noble Eagle (the invasion of Iraq). This particular helicopter is currently being used by Marine Corps Forces Central Command stationed out of Kuwait City as Task Unit 134 Coral Sea which provides coastal security for that region alongside other coalition members such as United States Marines Expeditionary Brigade – MAGTF Kuwaiti Carbine Battalion 3/5 Battalion Commander “Dolphin” unit flying UH-1Y Hueys providing low altitude heliborne support while participating in Combined Joint Task Force -Operation Neptune Spear Strike Against targets within Iraq airspace; this simultaneous operation included over 10 Carrier Strike Groups operating simultaneously throughout Middle East theater making it one largest Unified Warfighter action ever conducted by any nation upon their soil….. Today we are proud to say that since this helicopters arrival our Bases have been able to provide homeland security tours or fly students back home after safety flights………. Thank you Canada!

It has a population of around 25,000 people and was originally called Fort Snelling after General James Snelling who occupied the fort in 1821. The name change to Palm Bay in 1917 when an oil well was drilled in the area. The oil well led to the town's growth and development as a shipping and production center for oilseed crops. In 1951, Palm Bay became part of Broward County and remains an unincorporated community today.
The town of Palm Bay was founded in 1918 by John A. Purdy and his brother, Walter J. Purdy. The first post office was opened in 1920. In 1924, the name of the town was changed to Fort Myers after the U.S.A.'s first naval base at Fort Myers, Florida on Indian River Lagoon. The name change came about because then-Mayor James Gentry felt that the name "Fort Myers" didn't sound as though it belonged to a town in Florida but rather an outlying island off Miami Beach, which he hoped would become a shopping center and tourist destination for Fort Myers residents and visitors alike. Palm Bay's history can be traced back to when developers began planning the area around Indian River Lagoon for development in 1918-1920. Initially they planned just one small community called "Purdytown," but word got around and soon other developers were wanting in on the action, so they decided to rename their communities after various key figures from local history or culture who had helped contribute to their towns' existence: John A. Purdy for founding Palm Bay; Walter J. Purdy for helping develop Indian River Lagoon; James Gentry for creating Fort Myers; and Mrs.�Lizabeth Swartzlander for her donation of land adjacent to present day palm bay
