Palm Bay is a city in southwestern Florida, United States. The population was 20,910 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Miami-Dade County metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Palm Bay was A.J. Fortunato in 1835. He named it after his palm plantation near Naples, Italy where he had been born and died a few years earlier. In 1842, Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt sent captain George Davidson with HMS "Orlando" to explore the area around Biscayne Bay and report back on its potential for development as a naval base and commercial center. They landed at what is now Palm Bay on September 12, 1842 and named it for their investor friend Commodore John D'Orleans who had financed their voyage Captain Davidson's report praised the potential of this location for commerce but also cautioned that there were no means of reaching it from land without being captured by local Seminoles or Pirates who posed an immediate threat to both Vanderbilt's ships and their crews This failed effort to develop Palm Bay led to Captain James Cook discovering Tampa Bay in 1795 while sailing through this region on his trip around South America Vanderbilt made another attempt to reach the bay in 1846 when he set out from Pensacola with two boats but only reached within five miles (8 km) of shore before running into high water USS Constitution under Commander Stephen Decatur recaptured him and brought him back home Commodore John D' Orleans then established a wharfage here on February 22, 1849 which became known as Commodore D'Orleans Wharf The first store here was called The Floridianophical Exchange Company which operated from March 24, 1850 until October 25th 1870 . In 1865, Commodore Samuel Eliot Morison visited here during his US Navy Expedition investigating Spanish Amarr vessels off Cuba . This expedition resulted in publication of General History of American Naval Operations (HGNO) Volume VII which included information about USS ConstitutionWharf . Commodore Morison renamed this wharf Fort Donelson after himself
When the United States Marine Corps was created in 1875, it was only one of a number of military services that were to be established. The Marines were not actually founded until 1881, but their history goes back much earlier. In 1775, General George Washington ordered the creation of an infantry regiment named for himself and his unit gained fame throughout the colonies for its fighting abilities. When the Revolutionary War ended, the Marines continued to serve as part of America's militia forces, but their name changed in 1783 when they became an all-male regiment under Major General Charles Lee. The first marines served with distinction during operations at Saratoga and Yorktown in 1784 before being disbanded in 1785. The next year saw another change with Marine officers becoming commissioned instead of just enlisted men. This however did not last long as promotions came slowly and there was still a great deal of competition for slots in the Marines. In 1800, Commodore John Denny called on all US Naval Officers to form what would become known as "The Tiger" Squadron which would help him conduct patrols off California's coast during Spanish aggression against American soil. Afterward Denny put together a group of Marines who would serve aboard warships and formed "Denny's Own" Squadron which participated in engagements such as Battle Of Trafalgar and Battle Of Manila Bay where they acquitted themselves very well. In 1802 Captain James Cook set out on his third circumnavigation of Earth while conducting scientific research with HMS Beagle along side Lieutenant Commander Charles Darwin during which he noted that marine life differed greatly from that found on earthbackward continents such as Australia or NZ where he had also sailed before. As news spread about Cooks journey it sparked interest among various naval officers who began to think about creating a squadron specifically made for exploring new worlds and by doing so providing opportunities both for advancement within service and travel outside America itself which later provided valuable experiences when navy personnel went ashore on French plantations during Napoleons campaigns in Europe etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera). A commission was eventually granted to Lieutenant Commander George Fenton who formulated plans for building a ship/shipyard specifically designed for such exploration including purchasing land near Monterey Peninsula - this site is now home to NAS Point Lobos (the old USS Ponce) - construction started shortly thereafter with Fenton serving as Commandant while shipbuilders built two vessels: USS Discovery (1804-1805), now docked at Pier 1 at Newport News Navy Yard; USS Erebus (1807), lost at sea after striking rocks off Newfoundland; USS Terror (1809), wrecked off Cape Horn; USS Dolphin (1812), lost at sea south of Santa Cruz Island following battle with Spanish frigates San Fernando de la Palma y Puerto de Santa Clara; finally HMS Beagle II(1913-1914) - these boats are currently docked at Kings Wharf near Sandy Hook Naval Air Station New England Incorporating parts from both Discovery & Terror! With advances being made both militarily and scientifically throughout this period marine units began serving abroad primarily operating from merchant ships though occasionally joining army contingents or even raiding enemy shipping when opportunity arose either through raiding expeditions or engaging enemy positions ashore should hostilities break out between nations without regards to international law etcetcetc). However despite advancements there were still problems maintaining order amongst these often highly individualistic squadrons/units especially since promotion could come relatively easily without any proper testing or evaluation whereas other branches like artillery often required years more rigorous training followed by significant battlefield experience before reaching full draught status meaning many marines never reached proficiency fully achievable goals due mainly because they lacked proper leadership skills). During World War I efforts were made towards increasing maritime capabilities through establishment of Amphibious Forces Units composed largely amphibious assault boats towed behind tanks capable of landing troops onto beaches then acting as rear guard flank security while elements consisting landings beachhead artillery batteries providing fire support directly supporting infantry battalions) eventually leading up to Landing Force Groups comprising several hundred LCI’s/LHD’s each commanded by a lieutenant colonel commanding some battalion sized element consisting mostly tank companies although smaller groups soon evolved including Landing Craft Infantry disembarking shore batteries collectively designated “Task Force” nature permitting commanders freedom unknown quantities larger craft unable deep water operation making convoy escort essential) thereforeVMF’s played an increasingly important role culminating in Fleet Marine Forces becoming operational effective November 1945).
