The Palm Bay National Guard was activated on May 14, 1947. The Florida National Guard was first organized in 1917 as the Tampa Infantry Company, part of the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines Regiment. On October 5, 1917, the battalion was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines Regiment and activated at Camp Polk. The battalion served with distinction in World War II and later fought in Korea and Vietnam. In 1958 the battalion was again redesignated as the 3rd Battalion Palm Bay National Guard; however it never mobilized due to political reasons. On July 1, 1994 the battalion was re-designated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC) – Palm Bay National Guard after being reactivated from reserve status by Governor Lawton Chiles. HHC is an infantry brigade combat team that conducts joint operations with other state agencies including law enforcement officers from Broward County Sheriff’s Office and Fort Pierce Police Department). The battalion motto is “Semper Fidelis” or “Always Faithful” which means “Never Let Us Be Tamed By Fear orunity”. It lies on the southern tip of Biscayne Bay and is bordered by Miami to the north, Fort Lauderdale to the east, Jupiter to the south, and Pompano Beach to the west. The area now known as Palm Bay was first settled by man in 1795 by Capt. John Stroud and his party of Volunteers during what is now called "The Revolution." At that time there were no towns or settlements in Broward County. The first permanent settler was George Washington's brother-in-law James Robertson who built a cabin on present day Plantation Road about 1810 In 1837 Captain David Dillard organized a small group of men and women who bought land at Flagler's Key from J.M. White for $1,000 (the total amount paid for alluvial soil within this area). They named their new settlement after Governor Pedro Menendez de Mendaña y Salazar, Spanish governor of Florida at that time. The name was changed to Palm Bay in honor of then-President Andrew Johnson when he visited here in 1865 while on an official trip through Florida In 1868 AAGF Lt Col Emory Upton acquired 640 acres (256 hectares) near present day Village Green which became part of AAGF Post 3rd Brigade Headquarters located adjacent to US 1/2 mile east of today's intersection with US 1/2 mile west of today's intersection with SR 442 (now roadway US 1A) In 1901 AAGF Maj Gen Alfred Lee bought 990 acres east sideof present day Village Green which became part of Post 3rd Brigade Headquarters once again along with 2 other parcels totaling 10 acres each . These acquisitions made PalmBay into one large military post . From 1901 until 1945 Post 3rd Brigade Headquarters moved from its original location just south sideof village green across SR 442 (now roadway US 1A) where it currently resides . Today’s Headquarters buildings date back to World War II when they were used as barracks for Aviation Troops stationed at Everglades Airport prior to its construction
The National Guard is a branch of the United States Armed Forces that existed from 1790 to 1971. It was created as an umbrella term for different state militias, which were also called provincial guards in some states. The National Guard was first organized through the passage of the Militia Act of 1792 and grew rapidly during the American Revolution. The National Guard played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War by providing soldiers and support to various Patriot campaigns. After the war, however, it decreased in size and power as new militias were formed. The National Guard was re-organized under President George Washington in 1795 and again in 1802. However, these reorganizations did not change its basic purpose or structure. In 1893, President Grover Cleveland established a permanent national guard force by decree with primary responsibility for military training and defense against insurrection within the country's borders. During World War I there was an increase in military service due to both America's involvement on both sides of the conflict and Europe's economic sanctions against Austria-Hungary. In 1919, after America entered World War II, Congress passed the Army Appropriations Act which increased military spending by 25%. This act made it possible for President Franklin D Roosevelt to establish a single army corps instead of three separate corps used during World War I–1918 (the Regular Army; colored blue), World War II (the Army Ground Force; green), and Korean War (the Marine Corps). Although this expansion increased troop strength by 100%, it also caused problems because it moved many active duty troops into wartime jobs they would not have wanted if they had remained at home.[1] One reason why national guard forces have been so sporadic throughout their history is because there has never been enough money available to purchase or maintain large numbers of units on permanent basis. Additionally, unit commanders have often had difficulty Cheonguteering between their civilian or military responsibilities when combatting crime or other threats outside their unit's jurisdiction. As such, most national guard members are limited mainly to ceremonial functions such as drill performances or parades lasting several hours at locations distant from their homes or deployments overseas where they may be unavailable for significant periods of time (e.g., 1 year out of 5 years).
