Army gift history in Palm Coast, Florida began with the 1st Infantry Division during World War I. The division was formed on November 8, 1917 and arrived in Tampa Bay on December 6th. The division was honorably discharged on May 9, 1919. During World War II, the division was again called to active duty and participated in combat from February 1942 until September 1944. In 1945, the division returned home and disbanded. However, a small unit of the 1st Infantry Division remains today as the Palm Coast Volunteer Fire Department. The first military gift that Palm Coast residents received was a rifle from Florida Field Artillery Company #1 on December 6th, 1917. This gift was in commemoration of the men who had fought in Europe and were present at US Naval Station Pensacola when USS “Pensacola” became a training ship for artillerymen from throughout America. The rifle was given to Mrs. C H White by Lt Col Harry Laddington who served with FFA Company #1 at that time stationed at Fort Myers (now Miami). From this donation started what would eventually become one of the most popular Army programs - Christmas presents for enlisted soldiers! During World War II there were many donations of weapons to our community by both civilians and military personnel alike- many thanks are due to everyone who donated their items! When it came to gifts for enlisted members we saw something very special- Christmas presents! After so many years of service these individuals truly appreciated anything they received as a gift! In 1946 an individual named Mrs M Geddes donated an American Eagle tankette which is now part of collection at Ft Meade Museum/Armory Complex where it can be seen daily during museum hours or when open tothe public during special events such as Independence Day or Veterans Day ceremonies! This unique item has been displayed prominently outside Fort Meade since then surrounded by memories made over decades ago through artful displays done by volunteers from our wonderful community! A very significant event happened within our community when an organization known as SPCA came into being on October 14th 1948!!! What followed next is still talked about today among all those involved with that day- socializing new animal owners together before their animals were put up for adoption!!! It wasn’t long before other organizations joined forces with SPCA including United Way which later became Palmcoast Animal Control Agency!! These days we have numerous committees located throughout our city working diligently towards keeping our community Pets friendly- always bringing smiles to people’s faces while making difference in how healthy our furry friends can be!!!

The Palm Coast, Florida Army National Guard has a rich history dating back to the early 1920s. The unit was first organized in 1920 as the 1st Battalion,Palm Coast Regiment. It was redesignated as the 9th Infantry Regiment in 1941 and then the 3rd Infantry Regiment in 1945. The regiment was activated again in 1957 and served during the Vietnam War.
