The courthouse is still standing and has been used as a law library since 1911. In 1841, President James K. Polk approved plans to build an wharf at what is now downtown Palm Coast and provide access to transportation through Indian River County for white settlers seeking to establish themselves in what would become Orange County. Work began on the wharf in January of that year and finished in October of that year; it was known then as Fort Pierce landing harbor. The wharf allowed shipping traffic from Jacksonville to reach new markets such as Miami and Tampa Bay without having to go downriver into Indian River County; this made it an important factor in developing Palm Coast into one of Florida’s most significant communities during the early 19th century
