Palm Coast, Florida is a small town in Brevard County, Florida. It is located on the east coast of Palm Beach County and shares borders with Weston to the north, Jupiter to the west and Palm Bay to the south. The population was 8,890 at the 2000 census. The area that would become Palm Coast was first developed as part of Boca Raton in 1912 by Fenton MacLennan and others who were looking for a place to build their summer home before moving into permanent homes in Boca Raton. The name "Boca Raton" was derived from "Bocas de la Tortuga," or "Island of Turtles." The first post office in Palm Coast was established in 1916. The current building, which is currently used as a library, opened its doors in 1951. The community began erupting into notoriety when it became known for its wild parties and drug deals that took place during the 1920s and 1930s. However, things changed after World War II when many people from South Florida moved here because of new opportunities brought about by war production jobs. In 1945, Palmarco became an official city within Brevard County after being approved by voters via referendum ballot initiatives. As development increased along both coasts of I-95 (the main road through Brevard County), prostitution emerged as one of the most important aspects of life in Palm Coast during this time period; denser areas on both coasts led to increased rates of crime due to competition for available income sources. It remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became a town under the name of Jupiter Beach.
