The area was first settled by Native American people in the late 17th century, and by 1800, it had become a part of the Spanish Empire. In 1821, during the Seminole Wars, Florida became an American territory after being won from Spain through a military campaign. For many years, Palm Coast remained isolated from other parts of Florida, consisting mostly of agricultural land and swampy interior areas. However, over time the isolation slowly eroded as developable land was discovered in surrounding counties. In 1907, businessmen James Waddell and Cecil Burch bought 227 acres near what is now downtown Palm Coast for $10 per acre. They named their new town after JAMES WAFFERLEY (1793-1875), a local philanthropist and founder of Pensacola Bayou Company cattle ranching fame who donated much of his fortune to found the city of Pensacola. The Palm Coast area was first settled by the Timucua people in the early to mid-19th century. The hotel would later become known as The Hollywood Roosevelt and remained one of that area's major hotels until it closed its doors in 1978. A number of companies were founded along State Road 1 throughout history including Bananas Incorporated which operated a grocery store and convenience store on State Road 1 from 1949 to 1957; Jax Paper Company which manufactured paper products such as ballots and periodicals from 1951 to 1986; American Canning Company which operated canneries starting in 1917; Coral Gables Landfill which began operations in 1947; CitrusLand Corporation which grew oranges and other citrus crops at their facility on Middleton Drive until 1984 when it closed down due to poor water quality conditions; First National Bank who built a bank building at present day US1/State Road 202 next to IHOP restaurant before moving out in 2003; NBT Electric Cooperative who installed electric lines around this area beginning around 1961 before shutdowns over time due to problems with equipment reliability After years of discussion between local officials, developers, businesses and investors, construction began on Interstate 95 southbound exit 10 near mile marker 295 about 4 miles north east of today's Atlantic City Boulevard intersection.
