Captain John Stokes explored and mapped much of what is now Florida for Spain in 1763. In 1821, Armand de Lesseps founded a successful fur trading post at Fort Myers on the mainland opposite today's palm coast. By 1840, citrus production had become an important industry here and citrus trees were planted along both sides of the Gulf to provide fruit for local markets. From this early outset,Palm Coast became known as one of America's most prosperous agricultural communities. The Keys ceded control of their land to Congress in 1898 during the Spanish-American War following Cuba's independence from Spain. The United States acquired this territory as part of heel recognition following World War I due to its strategic location between Havana, Cuba and Tampa Bay on the US side and Santiago de Cuba on Spanish soil on the Cuban side. After being parceled out among various US states during Reconstruction, Florida was placed within newly created Miami-Dade County when it was organized into county government effective November 1st 1928 pursuant to an act passed by congress entitled "An Act Toorganized Miami Dade County." Palm Coast residents continued to share common annexation boundaries with neighboring counties until 1959 when all primary annexation boundaries were redefined through legislative action with Palm Coast unincorporated within Miami-Dade County proper effective December 1st 1959! In recent years many businesses have moved or closed up shop in what once was a sleepy agricultural community which has seen rapid growth over recent decades thanks largely to Interstate 10 passing close by! Some highlights include:the opening (in 2006) of Publix Supermarkets - one of America’s largest convenience stores - just outside town;the opening (in 2007)of Atlantia Airlines hangar facility adjacent to Pritchett Air Force Base;the completion (in 2009)of Army Reserve Center East Campus;creation (in 2011)of Fruitland Park Golf Course which provides excellent waterfront birding opportunities;and recently Club Med opened up shop down at Clearwater Beach!
The Palm Coast area was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. By 1821, the area had been organized as a municipality, and was renamed to Palm Beach County in 1923. The county seat was moved from West Palm Beach to Fort Lauderdale in 1928, and then to Palm Springs in 1959.
